From John Draper -Reuben Thomas Russell was a native of Kent in England (the family oral tradition was that he was a red headed Jew from Kent). Reuben Russell, alias John Williams, was tried at Faversham in Kent on 19th April 1847 and convicted. He was given 10 years for stealing from a dwelling house.Transportation to Sydney had ceased in 1840. Graziers were pushing for a resumption of transportation as a source of labour despite widespread opposition in New South Wales. The British Government decided to resume transportation and to make it more palatable called the prisoners exiles not convicts. This did not fool the people of New South Wales and when the "Hashemy" arrived on the 11th June 1849, over 5000 people protested in the pouring rain. One of the speakers was Henry Parkes. Another three ships arrived that year as part of this period of transportation. These were the last convicts to the colony of New South Wales.Reuben Russell was on the "Hashemy". The ship sailed from Portsmouth on 11th February 1849 and arrived in Port Phillip Bay in May 1849 before continuing onto Sydney. A number of the exiles were disembarked in Sydney, the remainder went to Moreton Bay. Reuben was initially assigned to the Maitland area, but by 1854 was in Goulburn as indicated by his ticket of leave application. On 14 June 1849, his Ticket of Leave was withheld during the pleasure of his excellency, for misconduct during the voyage. A Ticket of Leave was issued for the Maitland district on 1st October, 1849. This Ticket of Leave was cancelled on 26th May for his being in Sydney (illegally absent from district) and he was placed on eight months probation. A Pass to Proceed to the road party was issued. On 5 October 1852, the Ticket of Leave for Maitland district was restored, but was cancelled for not reporting his arrival in the district (illegally at large). On 26th July 1853, he was apprehended in Sydney and forwarded under warrant to Cockatoo Island on 27th July. On Cockatoo Island he would have worked in chains probably on the dry dock construction that occurred between 1851 and 1857. A Ticket of Leave was issued to Reuben for the Goulburn district on 25th March 1854. He was granted a Conditional Pardon in March 1855. Reuben Russell married Marion Allison in Goulburn on 26 June 1856. The wedding was in the Presbyterian Church. Reuben worked as butcher, and Marion at some stage became a midwife. They lived in Goulburn for a number of years although they had been resident in Queanbeyan between 1860 and 1862. In 1858, Reuben was signatory of a petition calling for the creation of the Municipality of Goulburn. Reuben had a butcher shop in Auburn Street during the 1870s. Reuben and Marion lived at 1 Mary Street, Newtown from about 1898. Reuben died at 92 years of age at 1 Mary Street, Newtown on 22nd August 1909 of pneumonia and senile decay. He was buried the following day in the Independent Cemetery Rookwood by a Church of Christ minister.
