HAROLD DEGROOT, 85, of George, died Wednesday, April 5, 2006, at Royal C. Johnson Veterans Hospital, Sioux Falls, S.D.
Born Jan. 17, 1921, in Rock Rapids, Iowa, he was the son of Chris and Lena Ackerman DeGroot. He married Wilda Moreland on Nov. 30, 1941. She preceded him in death.
He grew up in George and spent many hours on his grandparents' farm. He attended school in George, graduating from George High School. After his education, he enlisted in the Army. After his discharge, he returned to George. After marriage, he worked at Siebring Manufacturing. He later started his own carpentry business in George. He built and remodeled many homes in George and the surrounding area. He was a member of the American Legion, George.
Surviving are four children, Kendall (Linda) DeGroot, Sheldon, Iowa, Linda (Daryl) Mouw, Boyden, Iowa, Kevin (Marilyn) DeGroot, George, and Ann (Steve) Klaahsen, George; one sister, Evelyn Grotewald, George; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

"De Groot, Chris, Jr. - Lena Ackerman
Chris was the son of Chris, Sr. and Hendericka (Reka) Willemssen DeGroot and he married Lena, the daughter of Mike and Mary Hassebroek Ackerman. The couple farmed near Sibley for awhile and then moved to a farm east of George. Theymoved into town where Chris did carpentry work and ran a maintainer for Lyon County.
Their children were Harold (m. Wilda Moreland), Evelyn (m. Homer Grotewold, Jr.), Gladys (m. Ted Ver Doorn) and Dorothy (m. Carroll Ver Hoef and later Willard Van Hoorn).
A tragic car accident took the life of Chris and Dorothy in 1950 and Lena then adopted and raised granddaughter, Susan Ver Hoef, as her own child.
Evelyn was a business woman in George for many years and she took a very active part in community affairs.
Lena lived to be well over 100 years old and the Ackerman family she was from was noted for their longevity.
The family attended the Ebenezer Presbyterian Church."
