SIOUX CENTER, Iowa -- Jennie Berkenpas, 95, of Sioux Center died Monday, Dec. 24, 2001, at her residence. Services will be 10:30 a.m. today at Central Reformed Church in Sioux Center, with the Rev. Marilyn Rensink and Dr. Robert Vermeer officiating. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Oolman Funeral Home in Sioux Center.
Jennie was born Jan. 10, 1906, near Boyden, Iowa, the daughter of Adrian H. and Aartje (Mouw) Scholten. She was raised in the Hull, Iowa, area.
On April 8, 1931, she married Richard Henry Berkenpas in Hospers, Iowa. They lived in Le Mars, Iowa, for two years and then moved to Sioux Center. Jen was employed at Sioux Center Community Hospital for many years. Rich passed away March 20, 1997, in Sioux City.
She was a member of Central Reformed Church, where in earlier years she had been active in the women's organizations. She enjoyed bowling and crocheting.
Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Leone and Robert Eidsmoe of Rio Verdes, Ariz.; three sons and their wives, Alden and Joyce Berkenpas of Mapleton, Iowa, Carl and Barb Berkenpas of Ashton, Iowa, and Merlin and Peg Berkenpas of Sioux City; a daughter-in-law, Shirley Berkenpas of Rock Valley, Iowa; 15 grandchildren, Kevin, Rick, Keri, Todd, Guy, Sean, Erin, Cory, Jill, Jay and Emily Berkenpas, Cindy Osborn, Eric Eidsmoe, Elizabeth Orr and Kelie Haken; 19 great-grandchildren; and four sisters, Pauline, Martha, Arta and Arlyna.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Richard Berkenpas Jr.; a daughter, Jeanine Berkenpas; a grandson, Chad Berkenpas; and several younger brothers and sisters.
