He was very smart and held a job as procuratiehouder (officer of the company) at Shell Oil. He suffered from mental health issues and lost his job. (Source Koen Schweers, private communication)
Willem had his share of run-ins with land lords. In 1941 the city council of Doorn discussed the red-tagging of the house he was renting. Apparently the landladies did not perform any repairs and upgrades (on his request?). After Willem complained, the inspectors declared his home uninhabitable. Only after this determination were the repairs started. The city coucil discussed the reason why only his house was red-tagged and discussed if this was an attempt to get rid of the renter. At the Doorn city council meeting in March 1941, the landladies request undoing the red-tag on the house and in a seprate request Willem asked to be allowed to remain in the house for another 6 months. The city council votes 5 to 2 to deny the request of the landladies and hence Willem request is denied automatically. Source Newspaper: De Kaap March 22 1941, pg. 3.
In 1950 Willem was evicted by court order from his room in the Oranjerie on Kortenburg, because it was to be closed due to the building of the catholic church. The city of Doorn had found a suitable replacement living quarters, but Willem refused his newly assigned house. The decision was to evict him if he would remain at his house. He send another letter to the city council in September (De Kaap September 22 1951, pg. 1)
Wrote a letter to the city council of Doorn about irregularities at Doornbosch, the home where he lived (Source Newspaper: Stichtse Courant September 14 1951, pg 2). The city council of Doorn asked questions of the director of the home, who claimed that the problems were mostly caused by Willem himself and that they were looking for other housing for him, but that this turned out to be difficult in this situation (Source Newspaper: Stichtse Courant, December 5 1952, pg 2)
