Antoinette Vuurens was a person, who dedicated her life to helping people in need. She learned her medical skills in a 4 year internship at the Buitegasthuis in Amsterdam. She received her nurse degree on October 26, 1891 (source newspaper: Het nieuws van den dag : kleine courant October 29 1891; pg. 2, Also Newspaper: Algemeen Handelsblad November 20 1891; pg. 1 and Algemeen Handelsblad October 28 1891; pg. 1) She became the first director of the new hospital in Velp (Source Newspaper: Het nieuws van den dag : kleine courant, October 4 1892; pg. 2)
Placed an ad for a nurse on the paper (Het nieuws van den dag : kleine courant March 27 1893; pg. 20). Placed another ad for a husband and wife team for use in house and kitchen of the hospital in Velp (Het nieuws van den dag : kleine courant January 6, 1897, pg. 9. The address was Tramstraat Velp.
She was appointed the director of the Sanatorium in Rotterdam starting on July 1, 1898 (Arnhemsche courant 27 May 1898). A very large article about her personality was published in Newpaper: Rotterdamsch nieuwsblad July 2 1906; pg. 11. The speaches at her funeral described how she tirelessly led the institution both physically and spiritually until she had to (reluctantly) retire from the position in 1912 for health reasons (source Newspaper: De Bel, October 8 1935; pg. 2.
