Gladys Steenhoek Woody, the daughter of James and Gertie (Marks) Steenhoek was born April 10, 1920 in Jasper County, Iowa. In Gladys' early working years she worked at Terpstra Grocery in Reasnor, Iowa, and then at the Hough Grocery in Newton. Gladys then went to work as a receptionist for the Parsons Company, where she worked for several years.
Gladys was united in marriage with Neil M. Woody on November 22, 1952 in Reasnor. She became a homemaker and then in the early 1970's, Gladys became a teacher at Lollipop Lane, where she worked for many years until it closed. Gladys had a love and devotion to children, proven by all the children (young adults) who remember Mrs. Woody. She also enjoyed traveling and antiquing, She was a member of the First United Methodist Church , where she had been a Sunday school teacher, she was a past 4-H leader, and a member of the Chat-A-Bit Club. Gladys was a loving and caring mom, grandma, sister, aunt and friend.
Gladys, at the age of 87, died on Tuesday, January 22, 2008, at Hospice of Jasper County's Monarch Wing in Newton. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Neil in 1974; and a brother and sister-in-law, Harvey and Florence Steenhoek.
Those left to honor Glady's memory are her son, Harvey (Linda) Woody of Ankeny; her daughter, Robin (Paul) McCallister of Mena, Arizona; ten grandchildren and many great-grandchildren; her sisters, Wilma (Logan) Ver Ploeg of Pella; and Helen (Robert) Marshall of Newton; her brother , Carl Steenhoek of Monroe; and many nieces and Nephews.
