Captain John Sainsbury Lejuez

The man the Simpson Bay bridge is named after

By Mathias S. Voges

The first Lejuez to arrive on the island was Guillaume Lejuez, who was born October 31, 1775, in Cherbourg, France. He settled in Marigot and lived at the Rue de Geole. He married Anne Peterson born in Marigot. Together they had several children. He became a merchant and proprietor and owned land in Sandy Ground and half of Cupecoy land.

His grandson Jean (John) Henry Lejuez, born 1840 in Marigot, married Margaret Eliza Peterson, daughter of William Gumbs Peterson and Margaret Veda Lake, in the Saint Mary's Anglican Church in Anguilla. Many Simpson Bay-ers baptized their children or got married in this Anglican Church due to the lack of a church in Simpson Bay. The fact that most Simpson Bay men were sailors or fishermen made it easy to make the voyage to Anguilla.

John Henry and his wife had five sons. William Alexander Howard Lejuez b.k.a. Howard, my great-grandfather from mother's side, George Henry Twaites Lejuez b.k.a. Twaites, John Sainsbury Lejuez b.k.a. Sainsbry, Melford Lejuez and James Edwin Lejuez. Together with their father, who was a sea captain, they sailed for some years and became mariners. After their marriages, Howard and James moved to Philipsburg. Sainsbry, Melford and Twaites lived at the seaside of Simpson Bay. Their mother, Margaret Eliza Lejuez-Peterson a.k.a. Cola Lejuez assisted in running a little school in Simpson Bay, where, together with Ruth Vlaun, she taught the youngsters in Simpson Bay reading and catechism.

John Henry Lejuez left for Guadeloupe and afterwards settled in New York.

His son John Sainsbury Lejuez Sr. was baptized in the Anglican Church in Anguilla. Sainsbry married on November 12, 1883, Mary Davis Vlaun, daughter of Nicholas Augustus Vlaun and Sarah Eliza Peterson. Charles Henry Rozea and Ernest Benjamin Augustus Hodge were the witnesses at their wedding at the Court House.

In 1911 John Sainsbury Lejuez Sr. was the captain of the two masted schooner Robert C. Harris having one deck and measuring 34.24 m3 or 12.10 tons of 2,83 m3. His son John Sainsbury Lejuez Jr. owned more than half of the ship that sailed the Caribbean Sea, brought merchandise to St. Maarten and transported passengers to the neighbouring islands during World War 1. In 1924 the Robert C. Harris became the property of John Vlaun and was mastered by Captain Thomas Egla Richardson, son of Eliza Richardson.

As was mentioned in former articles, many St. Martiners travelled via St. Kitts and Curaçao to New York. John Sainsbury Lejuez Jr. travelled to Ellis Island via Curaçao on the SS Caracas and arrived on July 10, 1916. He was on his way to visit his uncle C. Vlaun. He travelled together with Francis Lejuez and Charles Williams.

Sainsbry's brother, Melford Lejuez, was the master and owner of the schooner yacht Rosemary, big 68 gross and 66 net tons. On June 13, 1911, he arrived at Ellis Island, New York, on the SS Guiana. Other St. Martiners on board were Audoch Burnett, Edward Duzong and Alexander Hodge, who were on their way to New London, where St. Martiners from Grand Case emigrated to.

St. Martiners emigrated to the U.S.A. or visited family by taking the SS Parima or the SS Guiana via St. Kitts to New York.

In 1916 the Lejuez family received the sad news that James Edwin Lejuez and his wife Adelaide Beatrice van Gurp lost their lives when their ship, the American schooner Bertha L. Basker, which left New York for St. Maarten on April 7, 1916, was lost at sea. There were also other St. Martiners on board, among them, John Charles Peterson, husband of Paulina Halley.

John Sainsbury Lejuez Sr. arrived at Ellis Island on May 26, 1917, from Kingston, Jamaica, on board of the SS Danube on which ship he was the 2nd mate. The SS Danube big 5946 tons was built in Scotland for the Royal Mail Packet Company and was 420 feet long and 52 feet wide and had three masts and two funnels. It was a passenger's ship that sailed between Port Colombia, Jamaica and New York from 1913 to 1917.

Three years later, Sainsbry was the 3rd mate on board the SS Ablanset, big 3545 gross tons with two masts and one funnel that arrived in New York. It was 324 feet long and 46 feet wide and performed cargo services between Lisbon and New York.

The bridge over the Simpson Bay channel was named after this great mariner and master.
