1. Joseph was a farmer, potter, and business man. He owned a pottery business for a few years and the business flourished. The business got to be too much for one person and he and Thomas D. Chollar became partners from 1835 to 1839. Joseph decided he wanted to return to farming and sold his half of the pottery business to his good friend Thomas D. Chollar. The pottery was sold locally and shipped by boats called "arks" down river as far south as Maryland. Farmers enroute bought pottery from them. It was quite a lucrative business yielding over 10,000 dollars per year. Joseph's great grandaughter, Nancy H. Williams, has a 3 gallon stoneware crock bearing the mark of ; "Chollar-Darby of Homer, New York".
2. Prior to Cortland Rural Cemetery, all burials in Cortland were where the present courthouse stands. In 1855 plans for the new courthouse began and those buried on that land were transferred to the newly opened Cortland Rural Cemetery. Joseph Darby Jr. bought a family plot there for his wife Selina and their two infant sons. He also bought trees for this cemetery and 2 large black wrought iron entrance gates. These gates were donated by the City of Cortland to the U.S. Government at the beginning of WWII.
3. In July, 1990, Don and Nancy Cecelia Hickey Williams (notes source) located the grave of Selina Darby and her 2 infant sons. They found that Joseph was buried next to Selina in an unmarked grave. They and Dorothy Gover had a new granite marker made for him and it was installed on his gravesite October 14, 1991.
