VIL 10. ROBERT [RADCLIFFE, or RATCLYFFE), LORD FITZWALTER, 1st surviving son and heir of John (RADCLIFFE), LORD FITZWALTER (a Barony held to have been created by writ, 24 June 1295), by Margaret, who was probably daughter of Richard WHETEHILL, of Calais, born about 1483; was early in the service of Prince Arthur (died 1502), and in that of Henry VII, 1502-09. He obtained the reversal of the attainder 1495-96, of his father, by letters patent dated 3 November 1505, procuring an Act of Parliament to the same effect (1509), whereby he became LORD FITZWALTER, and was summoned accordingly to Parliament by writs directed Roberto Radclyff' de FitzWater, Chivaler, from 28 November 1511 to 15 April 1523. K.B. 23 June 1509, at the Coronation of Henry VIII, at which also he was Lord Sewer. He attended Henry VIII to France in 1513, being in the vanguard under the Earl of Shrewsbury, and was at the sieges of Therouenne and Tournay; was appointed to be present at the Field of Cloth of Gold, June, and at the meeting with the Emperor, July 1520; Admiral of a Squadron, 1522, in which year he served again in France under the Earl of Surrey, taking part in the landing at Morlaix, 1 July, and the campaign in Picardy, 30 August-14 October; elected K.G. 23 April, and installed 7 May 1524. He was. created, 15 June 1525, VISCOUNT FITZWALTER. P.C. before 5 February 1525/6. He was further created, 8 December 1529, EARL OF SUSSEX, with an annuity of Ð20. A Chamberlain of the Exchequer, 3 June 1532 till his death; Lord Sewer at the Coronation of Anne Boleyn, 1 June 1533, obtaining in that year an hereditary grant of that office, with a fee of Ð20 a year; Commissioner to convey the King's demands to Queen Katherine of Aragon, 2 December 1533; Chief Steward of the Honor of Beaulieu, 28 May 1536, and the manor of Writtle, 1 August 1540, both in Essex. After the Northern Rebellion he was a Commissioner, with the Earl of Derby, to restore order in Lancashire, where he suppressed Furness and Whalley Abbeys, February-April 1537. Chief Steward of the Duchy of Lancaster, Northern Parts, 5 December 1539-November 1540. On 3 January 1539/40 he accompanied Henry VIII to Blackheath to receive Anne of Cleves. Chief Commissioner to inquire into the disorder at Calais, 9 March 1539/40, and was in charge of that town, 17 April-July 1540, on the recall of the Lord Deputy, Viscount Lisle; Great Chamberlain of England for life, 3 August 1540. He married, 1stly, shortly after 23 July 1505, Elizabeth, daughter of Henry (STAFFORD), 2nd DUKE OF BUCKINGHAM, by Katharine, sister to Elizabeth, QUEEN CONSORT of EDWARD IV, daughter of Richard (WYDEVILL), 1st EARL RIVERS. She, who was living 1 January 1529/30, d. before I I May 1532, and was buried at St. Laurence Pountney, London, but subsequently removed to Boreham, Essex. He married, 2ndly, between 11 May and 1 September 1532, Margaret, only daughter of Thomas (STANLEY), 2nd EARL OF DERBY, by Anne, daughter of Edward (HASTINGS), LORD HASTINGS and LORD HASTINGS OF HUNGERFORD. She, who was living in January 1533/4, died s.p.m. and was buried at St. Laurence's. He married, 3rdly, 14 January 1536/7, Mary, daughter of Sir John ARUNDELL, of Lanherne, Cornwall, only child of his 2nd wife, Katherine, daughter of Sir Thomas GRENVILLE, of Stowe, in that co. He died 27 November 1542 at Chelsea and was buried 4 December at St. Laurence's, but subsequently removed to Boreham. M.I. there. His widow married, 19 December 1545, as his 2nd wife, Henry (FITZALAN), EARL OF ARUNDEL, who died s.p.m.s. 24 February 1579/80, and by whom she had no issue. She died 20 October 1557 at Arundel House, Strand, and was buried 28 October at St. Clement Danes, but afterwards removed to Arundel. [CP 12[1]:517-20]
