Notities over Esquire Robert ap Ieuan Raglan

Robert was the second son of Evan (Jevan) a Thomas.  In Welsh known as Robert ap Javan.  Robert married Joan Clerke, the only daughter of Wilcock Lewrch (AKA William Clerke) of Knoyles Place, Llantwit Parrish, Glamorgan, Wales.  Joan inherited her father's property and Knoyles Place became the Ragland family seat until the early sixteenth century when it passed to the Matthew family of At-y-nill, Glamorgan. Robert was the first member of the Herbert family to assume the name Ragland.

Also known as Raglan. Robert’s father died at an early age, and Robert and his brother, John, and sister, Catherine, lived with their grandfather, Thomas ap Gwilim in Pert-Hir.  In 1418, at the age of ten, Robert went to live with his uncle, Sir William ap Thomas, at Raglan Castle. ; Robert was the first member of the Herbert family to assume the name Raglan.  He was educated at the castle with his two cousins, Richard and William, Jr. Sir William had been a body gmacrd for the English king Henry V, and fought at the battle of Agincourt in France.  He was knighted by King Henry, and became a successful London merchant.  In 1418, Sir William ap Thomas acquired Raglan Castle from the Somerset family, and married Elizabeth Bloett.

Robert Raglan, first of the name, lived later at Brecon.  Married Joan, daughter of William Clerk of Llantwit.  Five sons. The oldest, John, used Herbert arms. The younger used Clerk arms,  - unicorns, and lived at Llantwit. [Geneology of Virginia Families III:113]
