Hines/Hinds/Hindes/Hynes/Haynes/

The name appears to be occupational in origin. Associated with the English meaning "one who was a domestic servant".

The name appears as early as 1635 arriving in Salem, Massachusetts and spelled Haynes and Hindes. By 1640 the population was about 15,000 Puritans mostly from England. For the first 75 years the settlements were mostly hugging the coastal areas. The Salem witchhunts hysteria was between 1684 - 1692. Nineteen people were put to death for Witchcraft.

Because of stony land not suitable for farming and the oppressiveness of the Massachusetts government, many branched out from there to New Jersey.  There is a John Hinds and a Josiah Higgins in a group requesting to found a settlement in East Jersey before 1700.

The Carolinas came out of the Virginia domain in 1663. They separated the area to North Carolina and South Carolina in 1712. I think our Hinds migrated to North Carolina by 1760's. The Joseph Hinds branch left North Carolina and came to Kentucky and Tennessee as soon as the wilderness road allowed them to migrate and as soon as they were given lands for fighting in the Revolutionary War. By 1790, the first Census, They were already in
Kentucky.

The Scotch/Irish from Ulster came to the colonies in droves in 1718. They put them out into the wilderness to cut down the forests and fight the Indians to expand the territory for others and to get rid of them in the Boston ports and other coastal settlements.

Court records of Scotch/Irish settlements in the Shenndoah Valley of Virginia in 1745 - 1800 in Agusta, Virginia list ; William, John, Samuel, Mary, Edward Hinds, and Ann Hynes WifeofThomas Hynes. Also Solomon Turpin, James Ralston, and Benjamin Hinkle a German Luthern, and Isaac, Joseph, and Moses Hinkle. These are all names that show up later in Kentucky areas where Hinds are. I don't know if directly related yet or not.

Hannah Hinds is listed as given a grant for 400 acres of land on Rough Creek in 1784. An Andrew Hynds/Hyndes/Hines/Hynes was given land on Short Creek, Green River, Buffaloe Creek, Mill Creek and also Rough Creek and Soverns Valley in 1782-1784. I am not sure if he is connected with our Hinds family or not yet but he got land in the same areas that our Hinds did.

James Hinds given land on Dicks River Dix in 1786. Thomas Hinds given 1000 acres on North Branch Kentucky River in 1780.

Some have entered information in the Mormon Church on the Hinds from 1618 on and all the branches. Some of the information might be wrong. I have not found any old research proof of links yet. However, some must be true as many have researched the Hinds name linked to the Alden and Byram families for the DAR as links to the Mayflower. Levi Hinds son of Joseph Hinds in North Carolina, married Hulda Byram so I have much information on the branches from that union. Levi Hinds was the brother of our Joseph Hinds who is the grandfather of our George Hinds.

Joseph Hinds Sr, Joseph Hinds Jr, and Capt Joseph Hinds are all on the Wayne Co tax list of 1801. They were on the Cumberland Co tax list before that. Also Samuel and Levi Hinds, Simpsons, Davis, Mercers, Bonds listed.

Some Hinds are found in Illinois as early as 1840 but not sure if related.May be why Squire and Laura Hinds moved to Illinois from Kentucky in 1880/81. A Caroline Smith married a Hinds in the same area they moved to. No proof of a connection yet.

SOUR @S11334416@
by 1730, descendants are in Morris Co., NJ; by 1752, they are in Guilford Co., NC; 1780's they are in KY and TN

Emigrated to Salem, MA as early as 1637, and to Southold, NY in1651-52. He was a Cooper by trade.

"Hinds" originally spelled "Hoynes" or "Haynes", as well as"Hindes" and "Hinez"

Will dated 3/1/1652 in Southold, NY

Samuel, Thomas or James all born 1587 could be father of James

James HINES. The LDS records show that he was born 1613 in England, married 1638 in Salem, Mass, and died March 1652/3 in Southold, NY. Correct?
