Martin KRUTSINGER FAMILY
Martin Krutsinger and wife Mary E. Smith came to Lucas County about 1856 and settled in Ottercreek Township. They lived in a log cabin approximately two miles southeast of the town of Norwood. They came from Indiana to Illinois and on into Iowa in a covered wagon with five sons: Thomas Shelton, Elias Barber, William W., Andrew Jackson and James C. After settling Lucas Co. they had three more sons - Lewis Cass, Noah Lafayette and Jacob.
In 1862 at the age of Forty, Martin enlisted in the Civil War leaving his wife Mary at home with eight sons. Martin served in Co. E, Regiment 34 of the Iowa Volunteers. After serving 4 months in the Civil War at St Louis Mo. he died of Varila or small pox disease at the army hospital, Arsenal Island in St Louis, Mo. (Editor Note: Civil War records do not list a burial grounds for Martin -- only states that he died at the hospital at Arsenal Island, St Louis, MO).
Mary E. Smith Krutsinger (aslo known as Polly) and her son Jacob who died when he was 13 years old are buried in the Parr Cemetery located on the old Wheeler farm northwest of Chariton down the "Poverty Ridge Road."
The oldest son, Thomas Shelton, also enlisted in the Civil War and served in the 8th Cavalry. He was honorably discharged at the close of the war. He then came back to Lucas County and married Elizabeth Hall. In later years he moved his wife and four children to the Clarinda, Iowa area. He and his wife are buried there.
Martin and Mary's second son, Elias Barber, married Susan R. Daugherty in Lucas County and later moved to the Omaha, Nebraska area. Eventually they wound up in the state of Oregon. We have never known much about this family after they left Lucas Co.
The third son, William W. married Sarah Malesworth in Lucas Co., Iowa. They were farmers in the Oakley area. They both are buried in Mt. Zion cemetery near Oakley. ; They raised four children and there are no descendants of theirs living in Lucas Co., Iowa at this time.
Andrew Jackson, the fourth son of Martin and Mary married Martha Jane Sydebotham in Lucas Co. They were farmers northwest of Oakley and are both buried in Mt. Zion cemetery. Marian Miller is a granddaughter still living in Lucas Co.
James C., the fifth son, married Hannah F. Callon in Lucas County. He and his wife were the parents of two sons. James died when quite young. He died in Lucas Co., but as yet we have not located his grave. His sons traveled to Oklahoma and then to the Waterloo area.
Martin and Mary's sixth son, Lewis Cass, married Emma Ragan in Lucas Co. By this marriage there were two Children. This family moved to the Clarinda, Iowa area. Emma died and was buried there. Lewis Cass and the children then came back to Lucas Co. and Lewis Cass later married Emma R. Kendall Didier. Emma R. had a son by a previous marriage. Lewis and "Ruth" (as she was known) had a family of eight children -- five sons and three daughters. From the late 1800's until their death they lived on the same farm five miles west of Chariton. Lewis Cass, his wife Ruth, daughter "Ruthie" and son Roy are all buried at Hammondburg Cemetery in Warren Co., Iowa. ; That cemetery is located northwest of Milo, Iowa. Grandsons living in Lucas Co., at this time are William Krutsinger and Merle E. Peppers.
Martin & Mary's seventh son, Noah Lafayette, married Mary Evaline Sydebotham in Lucas Co. They lived in the Oakley area where they raised their four children. Noah and wife Mare are buried in Mt. Zion cemetery. Two grandsons, Ralph and Dean Krutsinger, still live in Lucas Co.
