On the back of this bill of sale was written-CC. I hereby acknowledge that the within instrument of writing was not executed until this day. I sold and delivered the within Negro lad to sd William Richards on the 14th day of Jun last past. Recorded Nov 3, 1788. Signed Oct 27, 1788-Susanna (SS her mark) Smallwood. Wit-Benj. Cawood. CC, Sep 15, 1788. Henry Smallwood came before me and made oath that the Negro man named Nace, sold by his mother to Mr. William Richards, was, to his knowledge, never given by his sd mother (as Mr. Richards alleges) to her son-in-law, Luke Smallwood, & his wife, or either of them. Will 9/24/1796 she gives "Hopewell" to her son, Walter Bayne Smallwood, probated 1 Feb 1803.
