Descendant of Bernard Fraser (d abt 1296), qv, it would seem.
---
Janet, daughter of James Fraser I of Phopachy, whose [James or Janet?] uncle, John Fraser, was Bishop of Ross from 1485, until his death on the 5th of February, 1507.  Her brothers, the Rev. Paul Fraser and the Rev. Almond Fraser, were settled in Rosskeen and Alness respectively, while her brother, John Fraser, progenitor of Dunballoch, was Chamberlain, alter oculus, for uncle, the Bishop at Nigg; another brother, Robert, being Chamberlain to the Abbot of Fearn.
---
Udard Fraser [qv], alive in 1200 AD in East Lothian, from whom the Frasers are thought to be descended, was the father of: Sir Bernard Fraser, 1st of Touch-Fraser, whose daughter became a nun; Sir Gilbert Fraser, 1st of Oliver Castle; and Adam Fraser, 1st of Drumelzier & Hales, progenitor of a large number of Frasers who later settled in Inverness-shire and followed Lovat, although they were not descended from Lovat, but from Drumelzier.  These were the Frasers of Fruid, Tain, Munlochy, Phopachy (Mr. James Fraser (1634-1709), author of the Wardlaw MS), Dunballoch, Newton, Kingillie and Fanellan.
---
2nd Generation: Oliver Fraser [Oliver Castle], Udard Fraser & Thomas Fraser.
Issue of Udard Fraser:
Sir Bernard Fraser, 1st of Touch-Fraser, Sheriff of Stirling; Sir Gilbert Fraser [Oliver Castle] & Adam Fraser of Drumelzier & Hale
Issue of Adam Fraser:
Sir Laurence Fraser, 2nd Drumelzier & Hales, whose son Laurence died without issue; and Sir Alexander Fraser (d.c. 1296).
Issue of Sir Alexander Fraser:
Sir William Fraser, 3rd Drumelzier & Hales, whose daughter became ancestress of the Tweedies of Drumelzier; and Bernard Fraser (d.c. 1296), progenitor of the Frasers of Fruid, Tain, Munlochy, Phopachy, Dunballoch, Newton, Kingillie & Fanellan.

Another source says Phopachy line came from the Fruid line (which came from the Drumelzier line).

Mr James Fraser of Phopachy (d. 1639), was Master of the Household ? Fear an Tighe, as he was called - to Hugh Fraser, 7th Lord Lovat.
---
The history of the Frasers of Phopachy is mostly based on a few pages contained in Mr James Fraser's Wardlaw Manuscript (or History of the Frasers) dating to the second half of the 17th century and printed in the early 20th century by the Scottish History Society.  James Fraser provides details of the family going back to the 1490s but the early generations described are confused.  What seems clear from this and original documents of the period is that the family descended from Fruid near Peebles and in the period 1490-1530 became caught up in the struggles of the Tweedies and Flemings.  This forced them north to Ross-shire by the early 16th century (1492 according to the Wardlaw Ms) and from there to the Aird in Inverness-shire in the early 1590s.
