Colonial Virginians and Their Maryland Relatives: A Genealogy of the Tucker ...
By Norma Tucker
p. 18
Frances, widow of Capt. William Tucker, is assumed to have been the sister of Edmund Smythe, Esq., who was named in Capt. Tuckefs will. Frances must have been related to the John Smith who was named guardian of the children of William Tucker of Warwick, but that relationship is not clear. Frances Tucker lived in Charles Co., MD, in 1659, when she filed the will of Thomas Tucker, son of Capt. William Tucker.
She was probably the Frances () Powell, widow, who married in 1670 in
Westmoreland Co., VA, William Clements. At that time, Clements provided a bond for 100,000 pounds of tobacco to John Tucker of Westmoreland County and to Justinian Gerard who married John Tucker's sister. That bond guaranteed that Frances could dispose of her estate as she wished. That it was made out to Tucker and Gerard indicates that they had an interest in Frances's estate. Because she was a wealthy women (Land at that time could be had at 100 acres for 4,000 pounds of tobacco.) and because these Tuckers had an interest in her estate, she must have been Frances, the widow of Capt. William Tucker.
