Married Elizabeth, daughter of Geoffrey Matthew, Esq., of Vorganwg in Pembrokeshire, son of William Matthew, son and heir of John Matthew, Esq. ; She died 2 May 1584; buried at St. Martin's**, Exeter.,leaving issue, 1 Geoffrey, 2 John, 3 Richard, 4 Robert,and seven daughters, 1 Joan, 2 Grace, 3 Alice, 4 Julyan, 5 Amy, 6 Elizabeth, 7 Katherine. There is a lease in the Guildhall Exeter, dated 3 November 1531, to William Tothill, Elizabeth his wife, and Richard his son.

Richard Tottell (or Tothill as the family usually spelled it) was the third son of William Tothill) a prosperous citizen and alderman of Exeter, who served as bailiff there in 1528,35 sheriff in 1529, and as mayor in 1552. This William had married Elizabeth, daughter of one Geoffrey Matthew, and by her had eleven children, seven daughters and four sons ? Geoffrey, John, Richard, and Robert. The eldest son Geoffrey was born about 1523,3 so the date of Richard's birth was probably somewhere near 1530.
