BIOGRAPHY
Patrick had livery of his father's lands on 14 May 1290; then became one of the competitors for the Crown of Scotland lodging his claim at Berwick on 3 August 1291. However he soon withdrew his claim to swear fealty to King Edward I of England and become a steadfast supporter of the English cause.
However, his wife Marjory Comyn sided with the opposite party and defended the castle of Dunbar for Balliol until in 1296, she was forced to surrender to King Edward I. In 1298 the Earl was appointed the English king's Lieutenant in Scotland and in 1300 was at the siege of Carlaverock.
