The baptismal records, plus the marriage records of the three oldest children, trace the movements of Hendrick Van Garden and Elenora Decker. They were living in Mombaccus [now Accord, Ulster County, New York] in 1722 when Jan was born; they were living at Shippekonck [near Port Jervis, Orange County, New York] in 1725 when Marretje was born; they were living at Metshepeconk [probably the same as Shippekonck] in 1727 when Johanna was born; they were living in Minisink in 1739 when Lena was born; and by 1741 they were living at Walpeck, Sussex County, New Jersey, where they appear to have remained.
It seems likely that they had other children between 1727 and 1739. Although normal naming patters prescribed that the first four children be named for the four grandparents, it was not uncommon to name a baby after a member of the family who had recently died, which would account for Hendrick naming his first daughter for his deceased first wife Marretje Middag. Still, one would expect children named Gysbert, Hermanus, and Rachel in this family.
