Frances D. Montanye |
FRANCES D. MONTANYE, 92, of Towanda passed away Friday evening, April 7,
2000, at the Skilled Nursing Unit, Memorial Hospital, Towanda. Born
Nov. 11, 1907, in Towanda, she was the second daughter of the late Frank
D. and Helen D. Tracy Montanye. Both of her parents were lifelong
residents of Towanda, where her father maintained a jewelry store
founded in 1840 by his grandfather W.A. Chamberlin and located on Main
Street opposite the courthouse. The family lived in a spacious
apartment on the second and third floors over the store in the building
erected by Mr. Chamberlin. After attending both private and public
schools in Towanda, Frances graduated from Towanda High School in 1925,
following which she attended Wells College, Aurora-on-Cayuga, NY. Being
especially fond of sports and athletics, she played on various
basketball, tennis, track and field, and hockey - during her high school
and college years. Initially she was employed as a member of the staff
of the Bradford County Department of Public Assistance. She left the
position after the outbreak of World War II to enter the U.S. Naval
Service as a W.A.V.E. officer candidate. She attended the U.S. Naval
Reserved Midshipmen's School at Northampton, Mass., and upon graduation
was commissioned an ensign. Having been trained in communications and
naval intelligence, she was assigned to the U.S. Naval Communications
Stations, office of the Chief of Naval Operations, Washington, D.C. She
remained at this post until after the end of the war and was honorably
discharged on Aug. 13, 1946, with the rank of lieutenant (Senior Grade).
She remained a member of the U.S. Naval Reserve, subject to recall to
active duty in an assigned mobilization billet in the event of future
hostilities. Frances resumed her civilian career, remaining in
Washington and fulfilling a position on the staff of the Committee on
Veterans' Affairs of the U.S. House of Representatives for a number of
years. Subsequently she was employed as a congressional assistant in
the office of the Hon. Edith Hourse Rogers of Massachusetts. Upon the
death of Congresswoman Rogers, Frances held a similar position in the
office of the Hon Herman T. Schnecebeli, member of Congress from
Pennsylvania. Frances retired in 1970. She spent 26 ½ years in
Washington, forming many friendships and enjoying the cultural
advantages the city had to offer. Nevertheless, she was happy to return
to her hometown of Towanda to rejoin her family, relatives and friends,
whom she had been seeing only briefly when on leave or vacation. As a
lifelong member of Christ Episcopal Church in Towanda she served it at
different times in a number of ways - as Sunday school teacher, member
of the choir and the Altar Guild, member of the Vestry, and senior
warden. She enjoyed active membership in a number of organizations and
clubs, including the George Clymer Chapter, Daughters of the American
Revolution; the 20th Century Club; and the Towanda Country Club, of
which her father was a charter member. Surviving are cousins Suzanne
and Edward Kulick of Wysox RR 2 and Ulilla and John Costello of
