"In the year 1918 or 1919, I forget which, my father died. I was the oldest of four children and the support of the family was my duty. So I went to Oneonta, NY, and secured a job as a trainman. I brought my mother and my brother and sisters to Oneonta. I later changed the spelling of the name (Montanye) by moving the Y ahead of the N. It was hard for the public to pronounce the name as we had done when I was a boy. There was no way you could make Montanye sound like Montaunee -- so that is how I and my family became Montayne."
