Notities over Rufus Fisk

Rufus was my dad’s paternal grandfather. My dad said the Fisks removed from Vermont to Illinois about 1818 where they had a farm for a time.
My dad told me that Rufus and Meribah, their 3 children, Mary L, Arna E, and Francisco came to CA with a wagon train about 1861,  My dad’s father was Frank and dad said that Frank told him he was about 4 years old when the family arrived in California.
Rufus was missing in the 1850 census because he was either in or heading to California and the gold rush.  Here’s my hunch.  Rufus and Meribah and baby Mary were probably homesteading in Iowa about 1847 when Mary was born.  Then, in the following year of two, there were headlines about the gold rush.  Rufus sent Meribah and baby Mary to her sister’s in in Rockford IL and he goes to California, works the diggings and returns to Meribah.  They set out again.  they were in Minnesota in 1857 when Francisco was born  - named for the Golden Gate City? and then two years later they were still in MN when Arna was born in 1859.  I pieced all this together from the info on the 1880 census, in San Francisco where Rufus lists his occupation as miner.
Dad said that there was another baby born to Meribah on the banks of the Red River in MN, but it died a couple of days later and they buried the little soul on the banks of the river.
My dad, George, was born in Alameda in 1895 and I was born when he was 52, so by the time I started asking questions, dad’s memory was running on fumes.  He did remember that Mary married a man by the last name of Marshall and they had no kids.  Arna married a fellow by the last name of Castro.  Dad said he was one of the members of the early California Spanish/Mexican Ranchero Castro family.  Anyway, Arna married Louis Castro when she was seventeen, and had two daughters. Carlotta Verne Castro and Viola Castro.
Rufus died in San Francisco in 1881, no month located, burial site unknown.
