Derick or Richard Ackerman was a Loyalist, like several of his Van Emburgh in-laws. He was a recruiter for Capt. Peter Ruttan's Company in the 4th Battalion of New Jersey Volunteers, which was stationed on Staten Island most of the time between May 1778 and April 1781. Richard was listed on the rolls of the company as "recruiting in the country". [See New Jersey State Archives, Trenton, NJ. Loyalist Muster Rolls, Reel #232, Vol. 4, pg. 1249.] He enlisted in 1776 as a non-commissioned officer. This company was made up of Loyalist volunteers from Bergen County, so it is possible that he remained in Bergen County as a recruiter, at least until his land was confiscated and sold on 21 August 1777.
The Return of Loyalists Embarked on Board the Transport Ships Bound for Port Roseway names Richard Ackerman as a cordwainer from New Jersey, recommended by Major Browne, with a household of seven [one man, one woman, three children over 10, two children under 10]. The passenger list of the ship Steady which left New York on 19 August 1783, bound for Port Roseway, Nova Scotia, includes Richard Ackerman and his household. There were still seven in all, but one of the boys was listed as a man, leaving just two children over 10 and two children under 10.
Richard and Elizabeth Ackerman lived in the Tusket River area of Shelburne County, Nova Scotia. They had another child, Abraham, baptized in Nova Scotia at Christ Church, Shelburne.
