William E M Oursler enlisted in Company I, 11th Ohio Cavalry on 5 March 1864. He was mustered out 14 July 1866 at Fort Laramie Dakota Territory. The 11th Ohio Cavalry served on the Overland Trail in the Dakota Territory from 1862 to 1866. During the last two years of its service, it served alongside the "Galvanized Yankees" of the US Volunteers. These were CSA POW's, who enlisted for service against the Indians to escape the horrors of Yankee POW camps. His widow, Nancy J Oursler, filed for a widow's pension on 5 March 1914 in Kansas.
