The First Presbyterian Church of Bloomfield was the first church within the present-day boundaries of Bloomfield. ; The date stone above the door reads, ["Bloomfield 1796"]. The master mason for the project was Revolutionary War veteran Aury King (known as Arie Koningh in Dutch). Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Cadmus (1734-____) is said to have placed a silver dollar in the mortar of the cornerstone at its dedication.

AURY KING'S MONUMENT
Wandering thro' the grounds of the dead
I came to a humble stone on which I read
These words: "To the memory of Aury King."
The stone had no eulogy or praises to sing:
Simply "Died in eighteen forty-six, aged 92."
Turning eastward from his grave on the hill I view
His monument — the walls of a church of stone,
Against which a century's storms have blown;
Yet the stones are as even, the joints are as true
As when as master-mason he laid them up new.
From the upheld spire the bell will outring: "
These walls below are a monument to Boss Aury King."
The stone used to build the church mostly was quarried opposite the copper mills at Soho. From there came particularly the three great stones at the three doors. Some of the stone came from a quarry near Toney's Brook and the Bromley property. Isaac Ball was one of the quarrymen.

I am working on a project for the Bicentennial of the War of 1812, reviewing Grave Registration Records to detirmine burial locations of veterans in NJ. I obtained a record card for Avery/Aury/Arie/Aurent [King] that has him buried in the Bloomfield Cemetery, Section 4, Lot number 240, Grave number 3. Then I took a look at file of Pensioners from the 1840 Census (described as follows "The 1840 Census of Pensioners, Revolutionary and Military Services was originally compiled by the federal government from the 1840 U.S. Federal Census, which required enumerators (census takers) to list the names and ; ages of Revolutionary War and other federal military service pensioners in households.") I was very surprised to find these two entries:
FIRST NAME, LAST NAME, AGE, HEAD OF HOUSEHOLD, TOWN, COUNTY
Aury King 86 Edmund H. Davey Bloomfield Essex
Aury King 86 Moses R. King City of Newark--South Ward Essex
Moses R. King seems to be a grandson of Aury (son of Henry King) and Edmund H. Davey seems to be the husband of another grandchild, Catherine King Dodd (daughter of Maria King). Unless there are two veterans by that name, my only explanation is that he might have lived in both households at different times and was included by whoever provided the data to the two census ennumerators.
