It is very possible, even probable, that John Montanye is William Henry's grandfather rather than his father. This is one of our most difficult lines in terms of hitting blank walls in our research to take the line back earlier than 1850.
Here are the military records of William Henry Montanye. William enlisted in August 1863 in the 33rd New Jersey Volunteer Infantry. However his name was recorded incorrectly as William H. Mittania on his enlistment papers which was common during the Civil War, as well the census records indicate he was illiterate at the time. What confirmed this as well was when I located William’s grave in the Ponds Cemetery in Oakland NJ, he has a government military marker which lists the incorrect spelling but gives the same birth dates as our William Henry Montanye. He is also buried right next to Lena Hetzel.
National Archive Records: William Montanya joined the 33rd regiment of New Jersey volunteers on August 27 1863 in Patterson New Jersey at the age of 19. The unit was rushed to the Rapidan River in Northern Virginia where it joined up with the 2nd division of the 11th Corps and he was assigned to Company E in the pursuit of Lee's retreating army. While on the March to Warrenton, Va William fell behind the regiment and was captured by rebel cavalry and taken to Richmond for exchange. He then rejoined his regiment which had gone West with the 11th Corps to join Sherman. He was listed as a deserter on the records because he had been straggling when captured. During the Chickamauga march at the beginning of the Sherman advance on Atlanta he again straggled on the march and was again captured October 19, 1863. He was imprisoned again and finally paroled in Savannah, Ga on November 20, 1864. He was returned to Camp Parole Maryland and given a 30 day furlough but then deserted. He was captured in Baltimore and court martialed. He rejoined his regiment for muster out in July 1865.
