I am a volunteer who works with the Chippewa County, Wisconsin, Genealogical and Historical Societies. We recently discovered that your ancestor, William Van Gelder, who is buried in Chippewa County served in the War of 1812. Do you have additional information about his military experience? Thanks. Roger N. Whiting

Details of William VanGelder's (1792-1885) military record are rather sketchy at best. He apparently joined the New Jersey militia in 1812 in Wantage, Sussex Co. I'm not sure that Sussex Co. was his county of birth, but it very likely was. Wantage was the birjh town of his wife, Catherine Courtright, whom he married 3 July, 1813.William's father was Jonathan Van Gelder(1737-1806) of Bergen Co., who was one of Ethan Allen's Green Mt. Boys who was with Benedict Arnold at Quebec in 1776
