Edna Evelyn Dickens 1881 - 1939
Edna Evelyn Dickens was born in Allamakee Co., Iowa, February 24, 1881. She died suddenly November 7, 1939, in her home in Chicago, Ill., of cerebral hemorrhage.
She grew to womanhood in North McGregor, Iowa, now Marquette, attended high school, later going to Teachers College at Cedar Falls, Iowa. She taught school for a time at National, Iowa, Pleasent Ridge and Sibley, Iowa. Then took nurse's training in Wesley Hospital and then St. Bernard's Hospital in Chicago, and became a registered nurse. She worked as a nurse for several years in Chicago and McGregor, Iowa; then returned to Chicago and took up social welfare work.
She was married to Dr. William S. Hector, chief of the surgical staff of St. Bernard's Hospital and professor of surgery at Loyola University of Medicine, on August 22, 1914.
Mrs. Hector was a member of Beverly Country Club and South Shore Country Club of Chicago, winning the womans golf championship of the South Club in 1934. She possessed a rare personality which won for her many friends.
She is survived by her husband, Dr. W. S. Hector; a daughter, Mary Jane and a son, William D. Hector; two sisters and one brother, Mrs. Edith Brenner of Portland, Oregon; Mrs. Charles Scrogum of McGregor, Iowa, and Clayton Dickens of Marquette, Iowa; also two half sisters and two half brothers, Mrs. W. E. Noble of Avenal, Calif.; Mrs. Zadie Smith of Portland, Oregon; Vern Ostrander of Salem, Oregon, and Harry Ostrander of Glenwood, Minn.
Funeral sevices were held at the Community Church in Chicago on November 10th. Temporary interment was made in a crypt in Oak Wood cemetery, Chicago, and burial will be made later.
Edna's body was later placed in a mausoleum in the Pleasent Grove Cemetery, McGregor, Iowa. She shares the mausoleum with her husband, Dr William S. Hector and her son, William D. Hector.
