After her parents died, leaving her an orphan, Martha Rachel Reid was first adopted about 1865 by her great aunt Rhoda Montanye and husband Samuel McCluer. Rhoda and Samuel McCluer died while Martha Rachel was stil a small child and she was then adopted about 1871 by Samuel and Jane Kirkwood. Samuel Jordan Kirkwood was the Governor of Iowa but before moving to Iowa in 1855, he had lived in Richland County, Ohio, as had the family of his wife, Jane Clark.
"Martha ended up with the Governor because he and his wife never had children of their own. They came from Maryland to Richland County, Ohio and eventually went to Iowa. He was a lawyer, and he had handled some estate matters for Martha’s mother."
According to family lore, as a widow Rachel lived for a year in the Kirkwood Pritchard home in Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio and then went to live with Kirkwood's sister, Henrietta, in Chicago, Illinois. An October 5, 1945, Iowa obituary for Kirkwood Pritchard gives her residence as Chicago.
Burial: October 27, 1945. Cremation: Acacia Park Cemetery. Medical Information: Stroke and arteriosclerosis.
If you are still in Iowa, you might want to visit Martha’s grave. She is buried in the Kirkwood plot--Block No. 4, Lot No. 18, Oakland Cemetery, Iowa City, Johnson County, Iowa." Descendants of Abraham Lincoln Pritchard
It is not clear when and where Martha and Abraham became divorced. The 1900 census shows Martha, going by the name Rachel, living with Jane Clark Kirkwood in Iowa City as an adopted daughter who was divorced by that time. According to Carolyn Pritchard Tobin, Abraham was a wife beater, and the divorce took place in Colorado where the Pritchards lived for a while. However, no information has been found of Abraham ever leaving Iowa. All census information shows him in Iowa through 1920 (1890 census information destroyed in a fire), mostly in Warren County. Abraham's and Martha's son Kirkwood lived in Colorado while attending college in Colorado Springs in 1908 and while working in Denver in the early 1900s, and Kirkwood Pritchard's mother and sister may been living with him in Colorado.
Marriage Notes for ABRAHAM PRITCHARD and MARTHA REID:
According to the marriage record, S. J. Kirkwood and E. W. Lucas witnessed the marriage. S. J. Kirkwood would be Samuel Jordan Kirkwood and E. W. Lucas was probably Edward Lucas, a brother-in-law of Jane Clark Kirkwood, wife of Samuel Jordan Kirkwood.
