ELIZABETH V. PECK
COOPERSTOWN — Elizabeth V. Peck, 92, died Thursday, Jan. 5, 2006, at her home on Eagle. Street in Cooperstown. ; The daughter of John and Alice (Baker) Vosburgh Sr., she was born Oct. 28, 1913, in Johnstown. Elizabeth was a graduate of Johnstown High School in the class of 1931 and from the Nathan Littauer Hospital School of Nursing as a Registered Nurse in the class of 1935. During the summers of 1936 and 1937, she completed courses at Syracuse University?s School of Public Health Nursing. From 1935 until 1948, she was employed first as a general duty nurse, then as a private duty nurse and finally, for a number of years, as a "school nurse teacher." She was an early advocate and pioneer in the implementation and extension of school nursing services in rural Fulton County at a time when all but three of the county?s, 32 schools were located in one-room school houses. In the late 1940?s, she obtained additional training at the Rochester General Hospital and graduated as a medical records librarian in the class of 1948. Following an offer of employment, she moved to Cooperstown and commenced her career as a medical records librarian at The Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital, a position she held from 1948 until her retirement in 1976.
She married Loring B. Peck on Oct. 26, 1957, in Cooperstown. Loring predeceased her on Jan. 23, 1999.
Elizabeth will be remembered as a very intelligent woman who was always interested in others and as one who truly loved the company of her friends and acquaintances. She had a special love for children and she enjoyed talking to them and "learning" from them. She was a faithful and long time member of both the Johnstown and the Cooperstown United Methodist Churches, the United Methodist Women and the Criterion Club. Elizabeth was predeceased by her infant sister, Mary Elizabeth Vosburgh; her brother and sister-in-law, Edwin B. and Arlene Vosburgh of North Carolina; her brother and sister-in-law, Frederick G. and Valerie Vosburgh of Maryland; and her nephew, Alan F. Vosburgh of Alabama. She is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, John R. and Elvira Vosburgh of Maryland; her nieces, Constance Rich of North Carolina, Marcia Bowers (Harry) of North Carolina, and Diana C. Peterson of Cooperstown and by her nephews, Edwin B. Vosburgh (Eleanor) of North Carolina, Richard K. Vosburgh (Beryl) of London, England, and John M. Vosburgh of California. She is also survived by 21 great-nieces and nephews and 33 great-great-grand nieces and nephews.
A memorial service for Elizabeth will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 14, at the Cooperstown United Methodist Church with the Rev. Sundar Samuel, Pastor officiating. A luncheon gathering, downstairs in the church?s fellowship hall, will follow the service. Spring burial will be in the Hartwick Seminary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family suggests that those who so desire make contributions in Elizabeth?s memory to the charity of their choice or to The Hope Foundation of Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care Inc., 1 Birchwood Drive, Dept. FH, Oneonta, NY 13820. Arrangements are under the supervision of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown and Milford.
