DOROTHY CULVER, WELL-KNOWN SILVARA ARTIST
Mrs. Dorothy L. Culver, age 97, of RR1, Box 116, Laceyville, PA (Silvara), went home to be with her Lord on Monday morning, Dec. 13, 2004.
She was born Nov. 5, 1907 on Edinger Hill, Tuscarora Township, Bradford County, the daughter of the late Frank and Cora May Whitney Gray. She attended the Edinger Hill one-room school and graduated from Laceyville High School, class of 1925. She worked as a bookkeeper, drove school bus and had her own poultry business. She was an avid gardener in her younger years.
In 1932, Dorothy married the late Orwyn K. Culver, who preceded her in death on April 1, 1978. They moved to the Culver farm near Silvara, where she resided until 2004.
Dorothy was well known for her talent as an artist in oil, acrylic and watercolor painting. She studied under local artists, Arleen Gaustad, Donald Smith, and for a short time under Joyce Hewitt Beck.
Dorothy was an exceptional artist in bronze stenciling, on antique tinware and antique furniture. She created numerous designs in the traditional colonial manner. ; Dorothy was adept at restoration of many fine pieces including weaving rush, cane, and splint chair seats. She also painted antique toleware in original Pennsylvania Dutch designs. For several years she belonged to the Endless Mountains Arts and Crafts Guild.
In 1985, Dorothy retired as tax collector for Tuscarora Township, a position she held for 25 years. She was also an exceptional seamstress and loved to read and watch the birds outside her kitchen window. Dorothy was a member of the Silvara Ladies Aid and the Silvara United Methodist Church, as well as advisor for the Tuscarora Township Historical Society.
Dorothy was a good woman with a strict demeanor. She enjoyed learning about her family history and was proud of her Scotch, Irish and Pennsylvania German heritage. ; She was exceptionally proud of her great-grandfather, Rev. Davis Dimock Gray, beloved pastor of the Braintrim Baptist Church for over 30 years.
Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, William Gray on Dec. 24, 1975, and Paul Gray on Sept. 8, 1976; two daughters-in-law, Mary Culver on Sept 25, 2000, and Jeanne Culver on Nov. 13, 2001; a son-in-law, Russell Snyder on April 3, 2004, and a great-grandson, Dillan James Gruver on May 2, 1991.
Surviving are three sons and daughter-in-law, Robert Culver of Angola, NY, Phillip Culver of Vernon, and David and Barbara Culver of Laceyville; two daughters and son-in-law, Louise Snyder of Mineola, TX, and Linda and Robert English of Silvara, with whom she made her home for 23 years; a sister, Margaret Gray of Laceyville; 21 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Dec. 18, at 11 a.m. from the Sheldon Funeral Home, Main St., Laceyville, with Rev. Beverly Murphy officiating. Interment will be in the Lacey St. Cemetery. Friends and family may call at the funeral home on Friday, Dec. 17, from 6 to 8 p.m., and Saturday, from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.
