Gebeurtenis (Alt. Marriage) op 26 juli 1808: Roxbury Township, Morris County, New Jersey.
Burgon "Burr" Montanye was born in 1783 in Shelburne Parish, Loudoun County, Viriginia, just two years before his father died. At the age of five, Burr was indentured by the Overseers of the Poor of Loudoun County to Nicholas Merrill to learn a trade. It seems likely that Nicholas Merrill was a hatter, since Burr Montanye was described as such in later years.
Burr Montonyn entered into a marriage bond in Fauquier County, Virginia, on 9 November 1802 to wed Charity Oldacre. Charity was the daughter of Abraham and Hester Oldacre of Fauquier County.
Burr Montanya was listed in 1803 on the Personal Property tax list of Fauquier County, adjacent to the widowed Hester Oldacres. He was not taxed again until 1806 in Loudoun County as Burr Montawnia.
In 1806, Burr and his brothers Joseph and Isaac sold to their uncle Bergon Montanye the land in Morris County, NJ, that had been given them by their grandfather Joseph Montanye of Roxbury Township. [Morris County Deed Book M:494] ; This deed indicates that Joseph and Isaac were then living in Lanceville, Illinois, while Burr was "of Virginia".
The last known record of Burr Montanye in Virginia is when he was taxed in the spring of 1806. It seems likely that he left his wife and family (for reasons unknown at this time) and returned to Morris County, NJ. He married Miriam Drake there, as "Buress Montonye, said to be from State of Virginia", on 26 July 1808. Miriam Drake was the daughter of Paul and Mary (Luce) Drake. While his bind-order back in 1788 makes it clear that his proper name was Bergon, named after his uncle, he was never again called that. Instead, he seems to have preferred the nickname of Burr or Burress. His descendants in West Virginia have assumed that "Burr" was "Bert", short for Albert
By 1820, Burress was living in Smithfield Township, Northampton County, PA. This is the last known record of Burr. His children by Miriam Drake eventually moved to Licking County, Ohio, near his uncle Bergon's family, but Burr himself does not seem to have lived in Ohio. It is not known where Burr is buried, but Miriam Drake Montanye ; is buried in Utica Cemetery, Licking County, Ohio.
Charity Oldacre Montony moved back home after 1808 to live with her mother in Fauquier County, VA. She was clearly enumerated there in the Census of 1810. In addition to son Joseph, born in 1803, and daughter Mary, born in 1805, it is likely that she had another young son who did not live to adulthood.
For the 1860 Census, Charity, age 75, was living in Randolph County, West Virginia, with her son Joseph, Mary Killingsworth, and two of Mary's children. The same household, minus Charity, was enumerated there in 1870, so it seems clear that Charity died between 1860 and 1870.
