Norman was a turret ball gunner on a B52 Bomber during World War II. During one particular mission his plane was overloaded with bombs and immediately after takeoff started to go down. The one thing they could do was start to drop the bombs and hope that the lighter load would help them get away before the bombs hit the ground and exploded back up into the plane. Well, they didn't get away, and the plane went down. Norman's hat flew off and went through the side of the plane. While he was on fire, he crawled out of the hole, rolled on the ground, and passed out. He woke up in the hospital a month later. He was the only one of the crew to survive. The Army doctors did such a good job with the skin graphs that you cannot even tell he was ever severely burned.
Norman was a salesman for Kraft Foods and had a territory in and around Columbus, Ohio, which is where they settled. They lived in Westerville. They lived there until they moved to Florida to retire. Norman still lives there in the Apopka area around Orlando.
