Philip Mansel of Oxwich and Penrice (b c 1420), who married Mabilia, daughter of Sir Griffith Ap Nicholas, of Newton, county Carmarthen, and co-heir to her mother, Jane daughter and co-heir of Jenkin Ap Rees Ap David Ap Howel Ychan Ap Howel Ap Rees Ap Rhudderch Ap Cadifor Ap Dinawal, of Gilfachwen, county Cardigan.

Amonst the MSS. at Britton Ferry copied by the Rev J M Trahorne, appears the following: 'Ego Phillipus filius et haeres Nuper Johns Maunselllea Oxenwich, 10 die men Maie, 1444.' By a deed dated 1459-1460, to which Sir William Berkley, Knt., then Seneschal of Gower, and others, are witnesses, Philip Mansel entailed Gower estates on his sons John, Leonard, and Jenkin. Philip and Mabilia had issue: John, Leonard, Jenkin, and Alice.

I. John, killed in battle during the Wars of the Roses.

II. Leonard, killed in battle during the Wars of the Roses.

III. Jenkin, who succeeded his father, of whom more hereafter.

IV. Alice, who married Sir Mathew Cradoc, Knt., of Swansea, Seneschal of Gower, and had issue by him:

Margaret, who married firstly Sir John Malifant, of St George's Castle, and secondly, Sir Richard Herbert of Ewias, county Monmouth, and had issue, Sir William Herbert, created Earl of Pembroke, 1551, ancestor of the present Earl of Pembroke. Margaret married, thirdly, Sir William Bawdrip. [History of the Family of Maunselll I:245, 247]

Philip Mansell, son of John Maunselll and Cecily, his wife, was 15 years of age when he succeeded to his father's and grandfather's estates, as per Inquisition held at Swansea by Humphry Plantagenet, Duke of Gloucester, 13th Henry VI. About 1444, he married, first, Mabel dau. of Griffiths Nicolas, of Newton, Co. Carmarthen, heiress of her mother, Jane, heiress of Jenkin Ap Rees Ap David, descended from Cadifor Ap Dinawall. In the Inquisition recorded above, Philip is mentioned as the son of John, and grandson of Richard Maunselll.

Among the MSS. at Britton Ferry, copied by Rev J M Traherne, appears the following: -'Ego Phillipus filius et haeres nuper Johis Maunselll De Owenwych, 10 die mens Maie, 1444.' By a deed dated 1459-60, to which Sir William Berkeley, Knt, then Seneschal of Gower, and others are witnesses, he entailed his Gower estates on his sons, John, Leonard, and Jenkyn.

He married, secondly, about this latter date, Elizabeth, dau. and heir of Sir Philip Long, Knt., and had further issue.

He fought a Mortimer's Cross against Edward, Earl Of March (afterwards Edward IV). On the same side were Jasper Earl of Pembroke, James Earl of Ormond, and Owen Tudor (who married Queen Catherine, mother of Henry VI). For this he was attained in Parliament in 1464, and two years later his Gower estates were bestowed upon Sir Roger Vaughan, Knt. as per Paten Roll, 5th Edward IV.

Philip and his sons, under leadership of his relative the Earl of Warwick, fought throughout for the Red Rose. Two of his sons were slain; and at the battle of Tewkewbury he was taken prisoner by Sir John Conyers, and was soon afterwards beheaded. [History of Maunselll, or Mansel p 19]
