Dictionary of National Biography. Oxford. 1967. Vol. I. p 932: Sir John Baker d. 1558, is said to have been of a Kentish family. He studied for law and on May 12, 1520 was made under-sheriff and judge of the sheriff's court of London and rose to the post of recorder of London in 1526 and later served as an ambassador to Denmark. In 1529 he was elected to Parliament, where he served the remainder of his life. In 1535 he was appointed attorney-general and member of the privy council, and in 1545 Chancellor the Exchequer. Two years later he became Speaker. He was part of the plot to exclude Mary and Elizabeth from the throne. He married Elizabeth, daughter and heir of Thomas Dinely, and widow of Goerge Barret, Esq; he had an estate at Sisinghurst, Kent.
