Henry Percy, the eldest son, 4th Lord of Alnwick, was also 1st Earl of Northumberland. He was aged 26 at his father's death in 1368, but in his father's life he had already distinguished himself in the wars with France. This Lord Percy being present as Marshal of England, at the Coronation of King Richard II, on July 13, 1377, was the same day advanced to the dignity and title of Earl of Northumberland and in 7th of King Richard was elected one of the Knights of the Garter. He rebelled against King Henry IV and was slain at Branham Moor March, 1407. This great Earl was Warden of the Scotch Marches 1359, General of Forces sent to France 1377, Sheriff of Northumberland 1377 and 1386, Governor of Calais, and had grant of the Isle of Man 1399. He married 1st Margaret, daughter of Ralph Neville, and sister of Ralph, 1st Earl of Westmoreland, whom he married at her father's castle at Brancepath July 12, 1358, when she was only 17. She never lived to be Countess of Northumberland, for she died May 12, 1372, five years before he was created Earl.
(Kin of Mellcene Thurman Smith, page 552-553)
He was the son of Henry, 3rd baron Percy, and the father of Henry "Harry Hotspur" Percy. His mother was Mary of Lancaster, daughter of Henry Plantagenet, 3rd Earl of Leicester, son Edmund Crouchback, son of Henry III of England.
Originally a follower of Edward III of England, for whom he held high offices in the administration of northern England, Henry Percy went on to support King Richard II. He was given the title of Marshal of England and created an earl at Richard's coronation (1377), but he switched to the side of Henry Bolingbroke (later, Henry IV) after Richard created his chief rival, Ralph Neville, 1st earl of Westmorland in 1399. On Henry's coronation he was appointed Constable of England and granted the lordship of the Isle of Man. In 1403 Percy turned against Henry IV in favor of Edmund Mortimer, 5th Earl Of March, and then conspired with Owen Glendower against King Henry. This rebellion failed at the Battle of Shrewsbury but, since Percy did not directly participate, he lost his office as Constable but was not convicted of treason. But in 1405 Percy supported Richard Le Scrope, archbishop of York, in another rebellion, and then Percy fled to Scotland, and his estates were confiscated by the king. In 1408 Percy invaded England and was killed at the Battle of Branham Moor.
