BARONY OF ROCHE (I)

THOMAS DE LA ROCHE, son and heir, born circa 1250, confirmed to Pill priory the gifts of the founder, Adam de la Roche the elder, and those of his father and mother, John and Maud.  In 1282 and 1284, staying in England, he had protection or licence to appoint attorneys in Ireland.  Sheriff of Cork from 1285.  In 1293 and again in 1295, he was ordered to go in person to his lands in Wales, to prevent disturbances, &c. In May 1299, among the "barons," and in 1301, 1302, 1308, 1311 and 1313, he was summoned for service in Scotland.  He was summoned to Parliament 29 December 1299 to 3 November 1306, by writs directed Thome de la Roche, whereby he is held to have become LORD ROCHE.  None of his descendants was summoned to Parliament.  In 1305, as Sir Thomas de la Roche of Wales, he acknowledged a debt in Tipperary; in 1308 and 1309, staying in Wales, he named attorneys in Ireland.  He married, 1stly, ----- , 2ndly Margaret who survived him.  He presumably died in 1313 or 1314.

According to CP XI:43-44, 3rd son William had a son John, dsp. before his sister, Mary (Mariota) who d. bef. 21 Jun 1377.  Mary m. John Fleming styled Baron de la Roche and had Margaret Fleming, who m. Sir Roger de Claryndon (who survived her) and, still under age, dsp. 9 Sep 1382.

The following is then copied from [Complete Peerage XI:44-45]:

After her death any peerage that may have been created by the writs, 1299-1306, went, according to modern doctrine, into abeyance among her co-heirs, descendants of the four sisters of her maternal grandfather William de la Roche. viz.

(i) Thomas de la Roche (age 11 in 1383), 2nd but 1st surviving son of Sir John de la Roche (by his wife Isabel de Bromwich), who d. 1376, son and heir of Sir Robert de la Roche, son and heir of Sir David de la Roche of Langwm, by Joan de la Roche, sister of William de la Roche abovenamed.  The representation was divided, on the death of (i) between his sisters, Ellen who m. Edmund Ferrers of Chartley, from whom descended the Devereux Earls of Essex, and Elizabeth who m. Sir George Longueville of Wolverton, etc., Bucks, whose descendants are trace by Lipscomb to the middle of the 18th century.

(ii) Eleanor, wife of Robert Verney and daughter of (? William Levelance ?) by Lucy de la Roche, another sister; age 43 and (much) more in 1383.  Eleanor's daughter and heir Isabel Verney carried the representation to the family of Perrot of Scotsborough by her marriage to John Perrot.

(iii) Sir Warin Archdekne (age 28 and more in 1383), 2nd but 1st surviving son of Sir John Archdekne, son and heir of Thomas Archdekne, Lord Archdekne (d. 1331) by Alice de la Roche, another sister.

(iv) David Fleming, age 40 and more in 1383, son and heir of Robert Fleming, son and heir of Simon Fleming, by Margaret de la Roche, another sister who d. 1360.
