Notities over PETER Hill

PETER HILL was born, on the birthday of the father of his country, 22 February 1835 in Freeburg, St. Clair Co., IL.  He was the son of James Hill, Sr. and (Sarah) Elizabeth Thrift.   Peter married 12 May 1859 in St. Clair Co., IL, (HANNAH) EMALINE (EMELINE) MITCHELL.  Emaline was the daughter of William W. Mitchell, Sr. and Rebecca Teter.  Hannah Emaline was born 8 October 1838 in Randolph Co., IL. She died 12 March 1917 in Marion, Williamson Co., IL and was buried 14 March 1917; Peter died 24 July 1899 at Rock Creek, Williamson Co., IL. Emaline and Peter are buried at Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Crab Orchard Twp., behind the Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church which is in the vicinity of Paulton, near Marion, Williamson Co., IL.

Peter Hill was a descendant from old pioneer stock, the HILLs and the WILDERMAN's.  Peter's grandfather & grandmother were Peter Hill, Sr. and Elizabeth Wilderman.  Peter Hill, Sr. was the son of William and Mary (Rittenhouse?) Hill of Franklin Twp., Fayette Co., PA and of Conneaut & Beaver Twps., Crawford Co., PA; the family owned land in both counties.  Mary Hill had died by 1803.  We do not know if William Hill stayed in Franklin Co., moved to Crawford Co., died, or, if he came with Peter and his family when Peter and Elizabeth, with their families, some of Peter's siblings and Elizabeth's parents, George and Patience Dorsey Wilderman, of Redstone Twp., and their children, came between 1803-1805, from Franklin and Redstone Townships, Fayette County, PA to Indiana Territory, later Illinois Territory and settled on Turkey Hill, which is between Belleville and Freeburg in what is now St. Clair Co., IL.

Emaline was a descendant from three great pioneer families, the TETERs, HENCKELs, and MITCHELLs.  Her father, William W. Mitchell was the grandson of the Reverend Peter Mischler/Mitchell, Sr., our immigrant ancestor, through William's father, Peter Mitchell, JR.  Both William W. Mitchell, and his wife, Rebecca Teter were descendants of the Reverend Anthony Jacob Henckel, and also of, (John) George Dieter/Teter, both of whom were our immigrant ancestors.

Peter and Hannah Teter Mitchell, Abraham and Mary Kittle Teter, and their children, with Hannah and Abraham's mother and siblings came to the Northwest Territory in 1797 with the BADGLEY Colony and settled in St. Clair and Randolph Counties in what was later to become the State of Illinois.

These families, with a sense of adventure, wandered to many new places as they sought to establish themselves and improve their lives.  The HILLs and WILDERMANs were, for the most part Millers, as well as farmers; the MITCHELLs and TETERs were farmers.

Peter Hill's father, James Hill, Sr. was born 19 June 1811, Turkey Hill, Illinois Territory, now St. Clair Co., IL.  James married 8 January 1833, (Sarah) Elizabeth Thrift born 20 April 1812 in either Rowan Co., NC or Christian Co., KY.  She was the daughter of Judge Samuel Magruder Thrift and Sarah Fleming Cowan.

Emelina Hill (nee Hannah Emaline Mitchell), age 21, born IL

Hannah Emaline Mitchell signed the renunciation record relinquishing her rights to administer her father's estate.  Peter Hill was appointed guardian of Hannah Emaline's half-sister, Isabell MITCHELL, 23 June 1862, and of her half-brother, William W. Mitchell, Jr., 8 November 1870.

Peter and Hannah Emaline moved from St. Clair Co., to Macon County where they resided for four years.  They returned home and in 1877 they sold out and went to Texas, but only stayed for two months.  When they returned to Illinois, they settled in Franklin County, Illinois.  Peter was a farmer, and at one time (1891) owned a Flour Mill in New Athens, St. Clair County, Illinois.  He bought land in Franklin County and engaged in farming for ten to twelve years or so. They never sold this land.  Emaline and sons retained the land for a long time after the death of Peter.  Hannah Emaline's half-sister, Isabell W. Mitchell was still with them when the 1880 census was taken.

In the late 1880's or early 1890's, his father's ill health, and the love for the old family farm, pulled him home again to St. Clair Co.   From his father, James Hill's obituary, 1891, we found the item: "Of his immediate family the deceased leaves surviving his widow, one daughter, and four sons.  The eldest son, Mr. Peter Hill, is a resident of New Athens and was formerly a well known mill owner....."  And then from:  "Portrait and Biographical Record, St. Clair Co., Illinois, 1892", we found the following: "Our subject (Peter Hill) farms three hundred and seventeen acres of land, part of which belongs to him and the rest in his father's estate, wheat being his principal product."

From:  "Portrait and Biographical Record, St. Clair Co., Illinois, 1892"

          ; PETER HILL

"PETER HILL.  The subject of this sketch, who resides on section 30, in Freeburg Township, St. Clair County, Ill., was the son of James Hill, who was born on the 19th of June 1811, on Turkey Hill, and left there in 1832 to live on the place where our subject now resides.  The father pre-empted this one hundred and sixty acres from the government, and remained there until 1862, when he removed to Freeburg, since which time he has lived the comfortable life of a retired farmer.  James Hill was married about 1831 to Elizabeth Thrift, daughter of Samuel Thrift. ; He owns three hundred and seventeen acres of land in Freeburg Township, was the son of one of the oldest settlers in St. Clair County, and was himself one of the soldiers of the Black Hawk War.  He has held the office of Justice of the Peace in this township for three terms.  His children were as follows: our subject; Samuel, who lives in New Athens; Elizabeth and James, both deceased; Jackson, living at Freeburg; Permelia, living at home; George W., who is managing a mill at St. Louis; Sarah, Anna, Theresa and Albina are all deceased.  The father is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church and one of the officers.

"Our subject was born on the birthday of the Father of his country-February 22, 1835 - on the same place where he is now living.  He was here reared and educated, and was married in this county to Miss Emeline, the daughter of William Mitchell a farmer.  After this ceremony, which took place in 1859, our subject lived on the old place for two years, and then removed to the southern part of the county, but returned again.  Discontented, he concluded to try another change, and so went to Macon County, where he resided for four years and again came back to the old place.  In 1877, he sold out and went to Texas, but only remained there two months and then returned to Illinois and settled in Franklin County, where he lived ten years and engaged in farming.  Affection for the old place clung to him in all his changes of residence, and he finally came back to it, to remain here ever since (1892). ; He has had seven children. Ellen died at the age of seven, and three died in infancy.   The living are Samuel, Joseph and Minnie.  Samuel married Mrs. (in error-s/b Miss) Nancy Eubanks, and is living in Freeburg.

"Our subject farms three hundred and seventeen acres of land, part of which belongs to him and the rest in his father's estate, wheat being his principal product.  Politically, Mr. Hill is a Democrat and is devoted to his favorite party.  He is a consistent member of the Baptist denomination and is everywhere regarded with respect and esteem, because of his consistent, straightforward life and his devotion to the principles which he avows.  Much travel and change of place have broadened his mind and added to his understanding, so that his views upon the questions of the day are always presented by him with fairness and intelligence and with due regard to the opinions of others."

Peter farmed the 317 acres, part of which belonged to him and the rest to his father's estate. After the Probate was settled, about 1894, Peter and Emaline bought land just south of Marion, Williamson Co., IL. In 1896 they bought land at Rock Creek, near Marion.  They farmed this land until Peter's death in 1899.

It was in Franklin Co. that their son, Samuel Arthur, met his future wife, Nancy Elizabeth Eubanks, the daughter of William Smith Eubanks and (Mary) Matilda Eubanks. Samuel may have remained in Franklin Co. on their farm, or, have returned to Franklin Co. later, because he married Nancy on 11 May 1892 in Valier, Franklin Co.  He took her home to Freeburg, IL and they lived on the old HILL Family farm with Peter and Emaline until they bought land in the vicinity of Marion. Samuel and Nancy bought land near Valier in Franklin Co., IL.

Peter and Emaline attended the Pleasant Grove Methodist Church where they are both buried in the churchyard directly behind the church.  After his death, Emaline moved to Marion, IL where she attended the Baptist Church.  In their lifetime, Peter and Emaline had lived in Freeburg and New Athens in St. Clair Co., Macon Co., Valier in Franklin Co., Rock Creek and Marion in Williamson Co., IL.

"A coffin went out today for Peter Hill, late of Rock Creek.  Mr. Hill once lived near this city and was well known in Marion."

(Peter, at the time of his death, lived near Poordue close to where he is buried; he and Emaline attended the Pleasant Grove Methodist Church where they are both buried in the churchyard directly behind the church).

Peter Hill's sons,  Sam, and his brother, Joseph moved to Marion, Williamson County, Illinois.  Sam bought a Livery Stable and later a Flour Mill.  Sam and Joe engaged in the milling business as well as in farming. Later Sam bought a newspaper franchise, and coal mines. ; Joe owned a food market and soda water bottling franchise.  Emaline found a home for herself close to her children in Marion.  In her latter days, she lived, until the time of her death, with her son, Joseph and his wife, Minnie.
