Marlborough MA. He married (1) MARTHA BENT 05 June, 1663, daughter of JOHN BENT and MARTHA ?.
He married (2) SARAH LEAVITT 18 September, 1685, daughter of JOHN LEAVITT.
Notes for SAMUEL HOWE:
Lived in Sudbury MA. Built the bridge in the NE corner of Framingham in 1673. Much additional Info in Howe Geniology book.
In 1682 he & Samual Gooken bought of the Natick Indians a Large tract of about 1700 acres of Framingham lands, which is referred to in local histories as the Gookin & Howe purchase. He was very
prominent in the early history of the town as it appears in the local histories, and is spoke of as 'a man of energy & pubblic spirit." Although the colonial laws were designed to prevent inns becoming resorts for revelry & drunkeness, it seems that towards the close of the Puritan Commonwealth, it became very difficult to find persons whom the magistrates would trust to enforce these laws, and keep orderly & repectable inns. In a communication by Joseph Noyes, on of the Selectmen of Subury, written 29 February 1692, to the Middlesex County Court, he says: " It is the minds of most of us that there should be none to retale drink amongst us. Oure fathers came into its purity & the convertion of the heathens, but instead of converting them, amongst other sins we have taught them to be drunkards." He further says, that inns should be for the intertainment of travelers, "not town drunkards," & therefore he recommends Samual Howe as the most suitable person to have license to entertain travelers." He served in King Phillip's war, in Capt. Nathan Davenports company, & was an officer in the military, & his name appears in the lists of those who suffered in the Indian war.  He married first, 5 June 1663, Martha Bent, daughter of John & Martha Bent, she died 29 August 1680: married second, 18 September 1685 Sarah (Leavitt) Clapp, widow of Nehemiah Clapp of Hingham, & daughter of John Leavitt of Hingham, Mass. born 22 Feb. 1659, died May 1726. He died 13 April 1713.

He was sometimes called Lt. Col., a man of energy and public spirit. He lived at Lanham and served in King Philip's war in Capt. Nathaniel Davenport's company. He gave to his son David, land in Sudbury on which was built the Red Horse Tavern, later known as the Wayside Inn. Samuel kept an ordinary or public house in Sudbury.

Samuel Howe, son of John and Elizabeth Howe, although not a Marlborough resident, some of his children settled in Marlborough.  He lived in Sudbury, Massachusetts and built the bridge in the north-east corner of Framingham in 1673.  He served in King Philips War in Captain Nathan Davenport's Company and was an officer in the Militia. He reached the rank of Colonel

G00KIN and HOW's Purchase -May 19, 1682, Samuel Gookin ; of Cambridge, and Samuel How of Sudbury, purchased of the Natick Indians 1700 acres of land, which, from subsequent conveyances appears to have extended along the road from Sudbury to Sherburne, south of Cochituate brook, including land about Indian Head and Succo pond. Confirmation of this purchase was made by the General Court Nov. 20, 1696, to the grantees and " the tortenants holding under them." *

* Of this tract, in 1683 John Bent purchased 60 acres W. of Cochitnate brook, and bounded on his own land; and David Stone, 200 acres ; and Matthew Rice, in 11694, 300 acres, W. side of the way from Stone's mills to John Pratt senior's land," at Indian Head. Thomas Walker, Jr. and John Pratt were also early purchasers.

History of the Red Horse Tavern owned by the Howe Family

The How family chose a location mid-way between Boston and Worcester on the Bay Path, as well as on a trail to Hartford, Connecticut. For two centuries after the granting of John How's original license for a tavern in 1661, the How family thrived as innkeepers. John's son, Samuel, applied for a license in 1692 and in 1694 built his own tavern. In turn, he deeded his son David 30 acres in 1702 on which to build another inn, which still stands, and was to become famous in Longfellow's "Tales of a Wayside Inn." This inn was a two-room building with a common room below and a chamber above and was known as "How's Tavern." By 1716, David How added "House Number Two" to the original building, consisting of a room downstairs and one upstairs, both to the left of the original Inn's entrance. David's son Ezekiel became proprietor of the Inn in 1774 and changed the name to the "Red Horse Tavern." Lt. Col. Ezekiel How led the 4th Regiment of Middlesex County Militia on April 19, 1775
