Assumed the name de Ufford (d'Ufford) from his Lordship of that name, near Woodbridge in Suffolk. He was sent to Ireland as Jisticiary in 1269 "to settle and pacify Erin, and is said to have built the castle at Roscommon. He had a grant from Prince Edward of the rich manor of Kilmeaden, in Waterford, and was again Justiciary of Ireland from 1276-1281.
