Ship captain, prior information available from Robert Daniel (England and book: A Visitation of Cheshire and Over Tabley.  More cross references on other books

Virginia militia.  Land grant Lancaster VA in 1672, received land patent for 115 acres, (Pat. bk 6 pg 415).  Joined Christ Church 6/2/1684.  First appears as captain 11/12/1689 in Middlesex, Co. Virginia Militia.  Land grant Lancaster, VA 1672.  Vestryman Christ Church 1684-1695.  William may be descended from Robert Daniell who went to Scotland from England and settled at Rydelegh and later married Alice De Rydelegh and had son Robert who became Lord Ridley. William was colonel of reserves of infantry and Governor of a garrison and citadel in Ayre, Scotland.

William as the son of Peter and Christian (Grosvenor) Daniel.  One reference suggests that William may actually have been born in Wigon (Wigan), Lancashire, England. ; The Daniel family of Over Tabley, Cheshire, England can be trace back to at least 1291, but became extinct in 1726 upon the death of Sir Samuel Daniell without male issue.  This information is based on the work of George Ormerods "History of the County Palatine and City of Chester," 2nd edition, Published 1882, Volume I, page 475.  Peter Daniel referenced by the LDS Ancesteral file is of this line.  That Peter did have a son William, who married a Dorothy Forth of Wigan in Lancashire, England.

Some sources suggest that William actually spelled his last name Daniell with two L's.   William the son of Peter and Christian is variously reported as having 'died in his bed', while still in England.  Another William appears in the MA. colony and may have married twice, too Catherine Greenway and Mary Vivian.  The ancestry of William reported here makes the assumption that he is a son of Peter and Christian, but one source at Rootsweb / Worldconnect suggests that that William was born 8 Apr. 1625 at Over Tabley, Cheshire, England and died 26 August 1678 at Milton, Norfolk, MA. Another problem is the suggestion that the instant William may have married a Dorothy Forth.  One additional source for information on William is: "Captian William Daniel," Middlesex Co., Geneologies of Virginia Families, Vol. I, Virginia Genealogies #3, Family Tree Maker, Broderbund Banner Blue Division, Viewed on 29 Dec 1998.  There is a reference to a William Daniel born 8 April 1625, in Essex Co., England  and died 26 August 1678 in Middlesex Co., Virginia that very well may be the instant William.

It is believed that members of the instant William's family immigrated from England to Middlesex Co., VA during the 1640's.  William is believed to have arrived in the area of Virginia by 1650.  On 5 October 1672, William received a land patent in Middlesex Co., VA. Description: 115 acres by the Indian Bridge Branch dividing his land and the land of Alex Marray.  Source: Land Office Patents No. 6, 1666-1679 (pt.1 & 2 p.1-692), p. 415 (Reel 6). ; At one time, he resided on a plantation that went by the name 'Jemeco'.  William served as Justice in Middlesex Co., VA. on 2 Jun 1684 and aided in taking the Military Census of that county on 23 Dec 1686.  Based on information found in the Daniel Family File at the Orange County Historical society, William is believed to have purchased, or was granted, 300 acres on the Briery Branch in Middlesex County in 1683. William was a witness to the will of Thomas Williams in Middlesex Co. on 30 Jul 1683 and as a witness signed his name 'William Daniell'.  He was again a witness to the will of Christian Robinson on 27 Jan 1692 in the same county, wherein he is mentioned as 'loving friend Captain William Daniel'.  In the Robinson will, William received a ring and was named executor of the will.  William's two daughter's Agatha and Catherine are mentioned as 'loving God daughters' and each received one cow and one calf each.  It is believed that since he ceased his political activity as well as the fact that he did not appear as a witness to prove Robinson's will lends support to the belief that he may have become physically inactive about that time.

From: CAPTAIN William DANIELL  OF MIDDLESEX CO., VIRGINIA whose internet site as of June 2002 is located at: http://paynedaniel.com/captainwm/index.htm#TOC.  Reference: Judge W. B. Newman; "CAPTAIN William DANIEL, of MIDDLESEX, some of his descendants and other Daniels of Virginia," and "GENEALOGIES OF VIRGINIA FAMILIES" from Tyler's Quarterly Historical and Genealogical Magazine, Vol.1.  Many entries such as dates of birth, baptisms, and marriage dates have been verified in the Parish Register of Christ Church, Middlesex Co., Virginia, 1650-1812.

William Daniell was the founder of the Daniel family in Middlesex Co., Virginia.  Apparently he survived two wives and amassed property that he shared with his sons, Robert Jr., William, and his grandson Robert.  It has been suggested that Robert Daniel Jr., had two wives as well. It was a common practice for a father to acquire property and hand it down to his male heirs, whereupon,  they would continue to add to the family holdings.  There is no early reference to indicate where William Daniell got the title of Captain, but it was probably an honorary award for his service to Middlesex County?   Ref: A Place in Time, Middlesex Co., Virginia 1650-1750, by Darrett B. and Anita H. Rutman.

As church warden, William Daniel was ordered to take possession of 100 acres of land devised by one William Gofdon.  this was ordered at the Vestry meeting of 5 Jan 1685.  the land was to be applied toward the use of schools.  The following year, 6 December 1686, he was paid 1,400 pounds of tobacco for railing in the communion table.  This was the only time when he was refrerred to as William Daniel Sr.  He served as a Justice in Middlesex Co. as of 2 Jun 1684 and aided in taking the Military Census of that County on 23 Dec 1686.  Whether the designation of 'Captain' was honorary or official is not known, but it is of record that when certain supplies and equipment were orderd for the militia to that County in 1678, they were ordered turned over to him, 1 Jul 1689, so there is reasonable grounds for believiong the title was not an honorary one.

There is a significant lineage for Captain William Daniel in Broderbund's World Family Tree, Vol. 5, #873, but one must be careful with this file as it does not refer to a source and it appears to have inaccuracies.  There is no connection of William's line with the Daniel line of Wigan, Lancaster Co., England.  Several years of professional research has failed to turn up any proof of William's origins.  Col. William Daniel of Wigan was married to Dorothy Forth. They had two sons, William and Henry, who died childless.  These Daniels did not come over to America!  The following is from Heinemann, Family 1, 1949: "William Daniel; 1673 et seq. a William Daniel continues of record in Middlesex Co., VA, where he died in 1698."

I have pages 14-15,18-27, 28-33, 52-55, 62-63, 66-67, 78-79, 86-87, 90-93, 96-99, 100-101,106-111, 122-123, 126-127, 130-131, 152-3, 156-157, 162-163, 170-177,180-181, 188-191, 218-219, 252-253, 264-265, 310-311.

Many of the instant William's Daniel family can be found in Middlesex Co., Va. in late 1600s thru 1800, and appear in the Parish Register of Christ Church.  It no longer existed by 1812, but by that time, courthouse records were being kept.  The Christ Church of Middlesex Co., Va. attempted to record not only BIRTHS, DEATHS AND MARRIAGES of free whites, but also same data for many of their slaves.  While it existed, it was more useful to those of us researching our family than courthouse records would have been.  For example, it gave the name of child, date of child's birth and names of both parents... what a blessing that was for me, for late 1600s up to mid 1700s when my Daniel family lived in this County.  This is how I was able to document the progenitor of my Daniel line: Capt Wm. Daniel (widow Jacobed), their son William Jr.,, William's son Obadiah, etc.  Even with such a great book, supplementing this information with wills/deeds and such, is a must due to the Daniel family habit of naming their kids the same thing at each generation.  We have to watch out for such stuff as Capt. William Daniel died not long before his son, William Daniel Jr. (both left wills, thank goodness).  There were other 'William Daniel' men (and as our previous mail), also numerous men named Robert.

William married (1) UNKNOWN about 1664.  Some researchers have assigned Dorothy Forth as the first wife of this William, but the William (William Daniel of Wigan Co.) who married Dorothy died and is buried in England.  (Ref : Daniel charts from the "English Visitations of Lancashire, 1623 and 1664")  Side Note: Theses visitations are very questionable and should be taken for what they are worth.

The instant William signed a will on 8 Oct 1694 in Middlesex Co., Va..  It is noted that the members of this family emigrated from England to the Northern Neck of Virginia in the 1640's.  (Compilers note: In an article written about Richard Tivia Daniel, a grandson of John and Mary Keen Daniel, it is mentioned that one Peter Daniel, an ancestor, emigrated from Scotland to Middlesex Co., Virginia, America, in 1656. It is more likely that William Daniell was the founder of the Daniel family in Middlesex Co., Virginia in 1660.  A Place in Time, Middlesex Co., Virginia, 1650-1750)   William Daniel, Sr. received land patent 1672 in Middlesex Co., Va. ((XXXXX@XXXX.XXX)).  William appears in the records of Christ Church Parish Register with the birth of a son, Richard Daniel, 30 September 1678.  The will of William Daniel is dated 8 October 1694 and was presented in court, in Middlesex Co., Virginia, on 3 October 1698, by Jno. Walker and Wm. Downing.

William Daniel, referred to in the early records as 'Captain' was a vestryman of Christ Church, Justice for Middlesex, Leading citizen in the have of royalist gentry and the ancestor of the Middlesex Daniels.  From the date of his arrival in Virginia and the fact that he had sons who were married in 1686 and 1687, it is probable that he was born before 1630 and married before 1665.  The first reference to him in the Virginia records is in a patent of 1653.  to Thomas Hawkins of Northumberland.  That was the year of the arrival of Alexander Smith in the train of John Robinson, and two years after John, brother of Alexander came over with Cuthbert Potter, Robert Chewnin and thirteen others for whom a certificate was issued (Lancaster records) to Sir Henry Chiesley.  Alexander and John Smith and William Daniel Settled in the extreme northwestern part of Middlesex County on adjoining plantations where they died years later.  One of the Daniel's farms was called Jemaco, which may explain the name Jamaica of a post-office near the locality.
