Notities over Katherine de Grandison

She was the Countess of Salisbury.  Katherine took a vow of chastity following the death of her husband.  According to "History of the Orders of British Knighthood", by Sir N. Nicholas, that, while dancing with King Edward III, Katherine lost her garter and this gave rise to the founding of the Order of the Garter.  From the Churchill Society [http://www.churchill-society-london.org.uk/garter.html]: "There are several versions of the origin of the Order of the Garter. The most picturesque is the following anecdote believed to be of King Edward. At a Court ball, where a lady, (maybe the Countess of Salisbury), lost one of her garters it is said that when bending down and picking it up - the lady blushing and those present laughing, ; King Edward tied the garter around his own leg, with the remark:-  "Honi soit qui mal y pense".   and "I shall turn it into the most honoured garter ever worn".

He [William de Montagu] married (in or before 1327) Katharine, youngest of the 3 daughters of William (DE GRANDISON), 1st LORD GRANDISON, by Sibyl, daughter and coheir of John (TREGOZ), LORD TREGOZ, and in her issue, coheir of her nephew Thomas, 4th Lord Grandison.  He died 30 January 1343/4, and was buried at Bisham.  His widow, who made a vow of chastity, and had dower in all his possessions, including the £20 annuity, died 23 April 1349.
