John (MACDONALD), Earl Of Ross and Lord Of The Isles [SCT], son and heir, a minor at his father's death, was born probably in 1435. As Earl Of Ross he was among the Wardens named for Scotland in the series of truces made with England 15 November 1449 to 1460. His proctors attended Parliament [SCT], 1455, 1464, 1467 and 1471, while he himself appeared upon a specially certified summons in February 1460/1, 4 months before Edward IV [England] appointed ambassadors to deal with his dearest cousin John, Earl Of Ross. By this time his piratical raids on the Orkneys had won for him there the name of "our old great enemy." ; In 1463, in fulfilment of his undertaking to England, the Earl concentrated his forces on a brief, but effective, raid in Inverness and Nairn, Bute and Arran. Whatever support Edward may have intended was prevented by circumstances in England. The Scottish government, so ar as is known, opposed the Earl by remonstrance only, until 1-2 years later, when his treason was discovered. Then he was cited to appear in Parliament [SCT] on 1 December 1475, and active measures were taken to reduce him to obedience. In his absence he was found guilty, his life and possessions were forfeited. He made personal submission in Parliament, 10 July 1476; and was then created and proclaimed a Lord of Parliament [SCT], with the title of Lord Of The Isles. The Earldom of Ross was annexed to the Crown, not to be granted to any other than the only, or 2nd, lawful son of a King of Scotland. In June 1481, Edward IV again commissioned an embassy of league and friendship to John, Lord Of The Isles and Lord Glenys (in the 2nd commission: and Earl Of Ross); but the Lord Of The Isles may then have been guiltless of treason, for in 1482 the Scottish King sent him a ship wherewith to capture the chief ambassador (a Scot). His son and nephew (if not the late Earl directly) continued to try to recover by force possession of the lands which had been resumed by the Crown. Forfeiture must have been pronounced upon him in the Parliament of 1493. Thenceforward he was supported by the King. He married, some years before 1464, Elizabeth, daughter of James (LIVINGSTON), 1st LORD LIVINGSTON of Callendar [SCT], by whom he had no surviving issue. He is said to have died in Dundee, and to have been buried in the tomb of his ancestor Robert II in Paisley abbey, of which he had been a benefactor in 1455. His widow retained the title of Countess of Ross, and died before the Martinmas term, 1506.
