I. 1. ANTHONY BROWNE, of Battle Abbey and Cowdray Park, Sus sex, son and heir of Sir Anthony BROWNE, K.G., by his 1st w ife, Alice (living July 1540), daughter of Sir John GAGE, K .G., was born circa 1528; was one of the 40 knights (made a s K.B.'s), 20 February 1546/7, at the Coronation of Edwar d VI; succeeded his father 6 May 1548, and had licence to e nter on his inheritance 4 May 1550. M.P. for Guildford, 154 7-52; for Petersfield, March and October 1553; and for Surr ey, 1554. Sheriff of Surrey and Sussex, 10 November 1552; M aster of the Horse to King Philip, April to September 1554 ; Steward of Hampton Court and of numerous other lordship s and manors, and keeper of the chase of Hampton Court. H e was created, 2 September 1554, VISCOUNT MONTAGUE; took hi s seat 12 November 1554; nominated K.G. 23 April, and insta lled 17 October 1555. Ambassador to the Pope and to Venice , 1555; a commissioner of oyer and terminer in 1556; P.C. 2 8 April 1557; Lieutenant General of the English army in Pic ardy under the Earl of Pembroke in 1557; Keeper of Hendele y Park, 1558-60. Lord Lieutenant of Sussex, March to Octobe r 1558. He was one of the 15 executors of Queen Mary, and o ne of the chief mourners at her funeral. He was one of th e two peers who opposed the separation of England from th e Roman Catholic Church and the Act for the Queen's suprema cy in the first year of Elizabeth, 1559; on a mission to Ma drid, January to June 1560; and to Flanders in March 1564/5 , and again in 1566. joint Lord Lieutenant of Sussex, 1569- 70- In June 1569 hewas a Commissioner of Musters for Sussex , and Chief Comimissioner June 1573, and joint Commissione r for Surrey and Sussex 1579. In 1571/2 he was implicated i n the plot for marrying the Duke of Norfolk to Mary, Quee n of Scots, which cost the Duke his life. J.P. for cos. Sur rey and Sussex, 1578. He was one of the 24 noblemen who wer e commissioners for the trial of Mary, Queen of Scots, at F otheringhay in October 1586. He took an active part in repe lling the Spanish Armada, and entertained the Queen sumptuo usly at Cowdray for six days in August 1591. He married, 1s tly, Jane, daughter of Robert (RADCLIFFE), 1st EARL OF SUSS EX, by his 2nd wife, Margaret, daughter of Thomas (STANLEY) , 2nd EARL OF DERBY. She died in childbed, at Cowdray, 22 J uly, and was buried 4 August 1552, at Midhurst, aged 20. H e married, 2ndly, before 10 December 1558, Magdalen, daught er of William (DACRE), 3rd LORD DACRE of Gilsland, by Eliza beth, daughter of George (TALBOT), 4th EARL OF SHREWSBURY . He died at his manor house of West Horsley, Surrey, 19 Oc tober, and was buried 6 December 1592, at Midhurst. His wid ow, who was born in 1538, at Naworth Castle, Cumberland, ha d a paralytic stroke, 21 January 1607/8, and died 8 April 1 608, at Battle, and was buried at Midhurst. [CP 9:97-9]
