Sir William Molyneux was succeede by his only son by his first wife, Richard, who married first Eleanor, daughter of Alexander Radcliffe, of Ordsall, and secondly, Eleanor, daughter of Robert Maghull, and was knighted at the coronation of Queen Mary. He served the office of Sheriff for Lancashire in 1556, and died in 1568. He was buried in the church of Sefton, under a tomb bearing the effigies in brass of himself and his two wives, and their children, with the following inscription and epitaph [see below]
[Ref: Molineux Memoir, p. 17]
On a comparatively modern, or at least defaced, quatrefoiled pedestal adjoining Sir William Molyneux's brass rests a slab on which are brasses of a knight and two ladies (of much inferior workmanship to those we have already noticed), and below them their large family of eight girls and five boys. The epitaph is only partly remaining and runs thus :
' Ye bodyes of Sir Richard Molyneux knighte and Dame Elenore his wyffe.'
A quaint, though, we believe, not uncommon inscription is on a brass plate at the feet of the knight :-
"Dame Worshope was my guide in lyfe,
and did my doinges guyde;
Dame Wertue left me not alone,
when soule from bodge hyed.
And thoughe that deathe with dinte of darte,
hath brought my corps on sleape,
The eternall god my eternall soule.
eternally doethe kepe."
This is the tomb of Sir Richard Molyneux(1) and his two wives Eleanor Radcliffe and Eleanor Maghull. He was knighted at the coronation of Queen Mary, was made sheriff of Lancashire in 1556, and died in 1558.
