Robert De Courtenay was born 1170 in Okehampton Devonshire England, and died 26 July 1242 in Iwerne Dorset Essex England. He was the son of Renaud Reginald Seigneur De Courtenay and Hawise DeCurcy. He married Mary De Reviers De Vernon, who was born in 1196 in Okehampton Devonshire England. She was the daughter of William 6th Earl of Devon De Vernon and Maud Mabirie DeBeaumont.

Hawise De Courtenay was born 1222 in Okehampton Devonshire England. She married John De Gatesden. He was born 1218 in Okehampton Devonshire England.

Viscount of Devonshire
Robert De Courtenay, eldest son of Sir Reginald De Courtenay and his 2nd wife, Hawisa D'Eincourt, succeeded as Baron Oakhampton, Viscount of Devonshire and Governor of the Castle Exeter, and Governor of Bruge, now Bridgeworth, 1214.  He died July 26, 1242 and was buried at Ford Abbey. ; In the year 1205, in the 7th year of King John's reign, he gave 500 ? and 5 palfries to have livery of the barony of Oakhampton, with the knights fees thereto, which were no less than 92.  In the 12th year of King John, to be released from debt, he covenanted to serve the King with 20 men at arms, at his own charge. In 17th of King John he was made Sheriff of Oxfordshire and Governor of the Castle of Oxford.  In 16th of Henry II, 1232, the King commanded him to deliver the Castle of Exeter to Peter De Riveaux, his favorite, by which the family of Courtenay was deprived of the honour and profit of the Viscounty of Devonshire after it had been enjoyed by them and their ancestors for nearly 200 years, although Robert De Courtenay had been faithful to the King and his father on many occasions. ; At his death his remains were deposited in Ford Abbey in the chancel of the church there with great pomp; and a stately monument, in the form of a pyramid, was erected to his memory.  He married Mary, youngest daughter of William De Redvers, Earl of Devonshire, by whom his posterity sometime after became Earls of Devonshire.

ROBERT de Courtenay, son of RENAUD de Courtenay & his wife Hawise de Courcy [Curcy] Lady of Okehampton (-26 Jul 1242, bur Ford Abbey, Devon).  The primary source which confirms his parentage has not yet been identified.  Of Okehampton.  The Fundationis et Fundatorum Historia of Ford Abbey records the death ?VII Kal Aug apud Ywren manerium suum?1242? of ?Robertus de Courtenay? and his burial at Ford[364].

m as her second husband, MARY de Vernon, widow of PIERRE de Préaux, daughter of WILLIAM de Reviers 5th Earl of Devon & his wife Mabile de Meulan.  The Fundationis et Fundatorum Historia of Ford Abbey names ?Johannam?Willielmi Brewer et Mariam Roberti de Courtney?uxores? as the two daughters of ?Willielmum de Vernona? & his wife, an earlier passage in the same source adding that ?domina Maria, juniore filia domini Willielmi de Redveriis comitis Devoniæ? was the wife of ?Robertus de Courtenay?[365].  Her first marriage is confirmed by the charter dated 1201 under which ?Robertus Comes Melleti? granted property to ?Petro de Patett et Marie filie Willi Comitis de Insula filie Mabirie filie mee? on their marriage[366].

Robert & his wife had one child:
1. JOHN de Courtenay of Okehampton (-3 May 1274, bur Ford Abbey, Devon).
