BARONY OF PLAIZ (V)
JOHN (DE PLAIZ), LORD PLAIZ, son and heir, baptized at Chelsworth, Suffolk, 14 January 1342/3; proved his age, and had order for livery of his inheritance, 29 January 1363/4, but he was never summoned to Parliament. He had licence to nominate attorneys before going abroad for a year, November 1364. In November 1366, being then a knight, he was going to Guienne, in the King's service, in the train of John of Gaunt, and took part in the Duke's historic march across France in 1373. On the accession of Richard II he was one of the seven Keepers of Harwich appointed; commissioner of array in Essex, 1377, 1380 and 1386; in August 1379 a commissioner there to assess taxes; in 1381 and 1382 on the commission of the peace in that county; and justice of oyer and terminer, 1382, 1383 and 1386.
He married, 1stly, perhaps early in 1353, Margaret, daughter of Sir Walter DE NORWICH. She died s.p. He married, 2ndly, about 1366, Joan, daughter of Sir Miles DE STAPLETON, of Bedale, Yorks, and Ingham, Norfolk, by Joan, daughter and coheir of Sir Oliver INGHAM. She died 2 September 1385, and was buried in Ingham church. He died 2 June 1389. [CP X:541-2, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)]
