Some researchers list his birth as Nov 16, 1737 at St Charles aux Mines, Pisiquit, Acadie. According to Baton Rouge Diocese records (v 2 p 247), Joseph was 'native of St Michel Parish, Quebec' (province of Quebec, not the city) and a widower of Carlote Campo, and Hebert's tells us 'of Ft St Vincent' near Montreal and his parents were Jean and Louise Latour DeRouen. His children's records always refer to him as of Montreal or Quebec or Canada, not of Acadie. Thus, there were two Derouens with the same name born about the same time, one in Acadia and this ancestor near Montreal.
