Wahan Markar Soekias was born on the estate and sugar mill of Soembring (Java), owned by his father.
A small chapel (Hakian church) was built in Japara in 1837 in Japara for his christening and his father employed a missionary for some time to educate him and his sister.
In 1853, a school was set up alongside the chapel, paid for and financially supported by Markar Soekias for as long as he lived. Every year, he gave the school 300 V.O.C. rupees (then still in circulation).
This school existed for 30 years before being amalgamated with other neighbourhood schools to form the new "Central School of New Julfa.
In 1825, the Soekias family were involved in the defence of Semarang against the troops of Diponegoro. The Governor General of the Dutch East Indies presented Markar Soekias wit a medal of the city of Semarang for his efforts.
