Mrs. Minnie Mantel, 90, of Orange City, passed away Sunday, January 1, 1989, at the Heritage House Nursing Home in Orange City.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Jan. 4 at the First Reformed Church with the Revs. Henry Poppen and Ralph Ten Clay officiating. Interment followed at West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City under the direction of the Van Etten-Oolman-Van Gelder Funeral Home of Orange City.
Minnie, who was actually named Wilhelmina Jacoba, was born July 6, 1898, on a farm near Newkirk, the daughter of William De Roo and Hattie Harmelink De Roo.
On April 27, 1921, she married Nick Mantel at Orange City. They also farmed at Newkirk. Mr. Mantel passed away May 27, 1949 at Orange City.
Mrs. Mantel spent most of her life on that same farm until 1953 when she moved to Orange City. She became a resident of the Pioneer Memorial Home in 1980.
In 1983, she transferred to Pleasant Acres Nursing Home in Hull and in 1988, returned to Orange City where she has since resided at the Heritage House. She was a member of the First Reformed Church of Orange City and belonged to the church's Dorcas Circle.
Survivors include her two daughters, Elizabeth and her husband Bert Verdoorn and Wilmina and her husband Gary Wielenga, all of Orange City; son, Jacob L. and his wife Barbara of Hospers; three granddaughters, Cheryl Wolf, Neva Erickson, and Marcia Van Oort; four great-grandsons, Ryan and Steven Wolf, and Joshua and Benjamin Erickson; two greatgranddaughters, Rachel and Kathrine Van Oort; and a brother, Henry De Roo of Brooten, Minnesota.
In addition to her husband, she was preceeded in death by two sisters, Gertie Mantel and Martha Vander Broek.
