Jan was born to Hendrika Maria and Pieter Mantel in Amsterdam, his beloved Mokum.
Who was Jan Mantel?
He was a happy man and a very proud father and Opa (grandfather) and he would constantly let you know how proud he was. He was 85 years young and well-travelled. He worked on ships most of his young life and spent years living in Europe, the US, South America, Australia and Asia. He was extroverted, loved to talk, whistle, sing, yodel and dance. He was a charming old school gentleman who would walk on the outside of the sidewalk and knew how to lead a woman while dancing.
He was an extremely optimistic and vibrant spirit who brought a smile to everyone around him. He was full of laughter and fun. When he would laugh, he was fully engaged with his laugh, letting the whole world know he was laughing. He relished life.
He had "people magic" and a wonderful charisma; he could talk to anyone, anywhere, anytime. He was by nature curious and interested in others. People liked him and he found incredible joy in meeting people and made friends all over the world. HIS GIFT WAS HOW HE WOULD STOP, LISTEN TO YOU, ACKNOWLEDGE YOU AND MAKE YOU FEEL IMPORTANT AND SPECIAL.
He amazingly found recovery from alcohol addiction at the age of 58 in St. Thomas, the Virgin Islands and truly had a spiritual awakening. He made a connection with a Higher Power and had immense gratitude about sobriety that allowed him to have a second chance at life thru Alcoholics Anonymous (AA).
He was AA proud and sober until the end, 26+ years of sobriety. AA changed his life and ours.
He travelled the world going to AA gatherings and meeting members. I have been told that he was a spiritual sponsor spreading the word of the Gift of Sobriety and Gratitude thereby INSPIRING countless individuals in AA. He was known as "Happy Jan" whose favorite words were Grateful and Hallelujah.
My father was always a thoughtful writer and had beautiful handwriting. He would wait in line at the post office for the most gorgeous postage stamps. I am forever grateful for his consistent love thru countless emails and letters with the stories he wrote and the beautiful pictures he drew. It felt like he brought me everywhere he went; it was almost as if I traveled the world with him always in his pocket and on his mind. I will treasure his letters.
His official diagnosis was Liver Cancer. The apparent quick deterioration of his health seemed to have happened sometime at the beginning of September most probably related to the growth of the tumor. I believe that my father returned to the US and to Belmont because of my mother's hand-written invitation which I brought to Thailand. His goal was to try and get better and be reunited with her upon her return from Germany. He was always praising my mother and telling my brother and me what a wonderful woman she was. He NEVER said anything negative about her. My last picture of him alive was when he was happily talking to her on the phone. It was truly incredible to witness those conversations and see how much he still cared for her and she for him. For me it was a beautiful ending to their love story which started in San Francisco when he was 34 and she 22. She asked him to marry her after 3 months. His drinking led to their divorce but with his sobriety I think my father dreamed of another chance to reconnect with her.
Some favorite memories of Jan Mantel:
Driving me to Notre Dame Elementary School in a VW red bug and yodeling as we drove up the hill and my friends would come running to the car.
Dancing at Wilhelm Tell, Little Switzerland and Pier 23 - from dancing as a small girl stepping on his shoes to being in heaven dancing with him at my own wedding.
Whistling our "private" whistle "Papa Dientje" so we knew where he was and we could find each other in a crowd.
Singing Opera with his beautiful voice.
Taking Andrew to the Rose Bowl multiple times.
Reno and his own business, a Sandwich Shop called Jan the Sandwich Man - where Andrew and I spent many wonderful summers as teenagers.
Going to the Pizza Oven and watching the Reno Silver Sox playing minor league baseball at Moana Stadium in Reno.
Andrew working at Circus Circus in Reno, his first job, and living in our father's small apartment.
Walking me down the aisle at my Wedding in 2002.
Being present at granddaughter Amaya's birth in Hong Kong in 2007.
Being at grandson Bryce Pieter's 1st Birthday in Hong Kong in 2010.
Leaving Sriracha,Thailand going to the airport and waving goodbye to people in the neighborhood because they knew him.
Sven remembering picking up Jan from the airport on Sept 15 and how excited Jan was to reach Belmont from Thailand and that even after his 26+ hour trip instead of being tired, he got into the house on his own with his walker and talked for hours – he was energized, he was relieved, he was finally back home in Belmont.
Dad talking to my mother on the phone while he was at the Skilled Nursing Facility, he loved her and it energized his whole being.
My father and his gratitude about being sober.

He wanted to be cremated with ashes scattered in the sea. He was amazingly grateful and seemed ready for his next adventure. During some of the last hours I spent with him he was sleeping and cried out "heaven, heaven" and I cherish having heard that. With his physical passing, I believe his spirit has now been released and he has moved on to a Higher Place.
In my mother's words,
"A life without dad is like a day without light!
An ocean without water and the sun is darkness!
We had some good times together and he was a good dad. As young children he cared for you and the time in Reno turned out to be special. He cared always when he wrote you so many letters. He kept in touch his way.
Now he is gone and Christina, Mein Mädchen, you did the best for him in his last days. You gave him all your attention and time. Thank you very much.
Andrew cared with his phone calls and emails and Dad made 3 trips to Hong Kong and Deepthi spoiled him.
Sven cared just being there and helping Christina, thank you Sven.
I cared calling him, it made him happy.
We turned out to be a family again and he passed away in Peace."

It is hard to believe there will be no more letters or emails from (XXXXX@XXXX.XXX),
but I know his spirit and love is all around me.
